It is always included as an easy to grow clematis on every list I have ever seen. It is a type III clematis which is resistant to wilt. For $5, I say go for it!

For $5 I'd go for it too, but my Jackmanii keeps wilting. lol

That's not saying much though. Every clematis I put in that spot has wilted.

My two Jackamanii wilted the first two years I had him, he's long over it and I tend to forget he even did it, it's a beauty now. I was new to clematis, it was the first one I ever purchased and I had not a clue on what do with it. I got two little immature quarts and planted them immediately into the ground. I learned alot from those first two bity vines.

I don't think my Jackmanii ever wilted. It was a really tiny cheap thing from somewhere cheap like Henry Fields 20 years ago. Here it is today, with my 5'11" daughter as a height reference. It would be taller if I gave it something better to grab onto.:

Done, I bought two of them and put them in already.
My soil is hard clay below the surface so it was a challenge to loosen it and add some garden soil and topsoil.
I watered well added a hosta to each base.
Can't wait to see how ti goes.

cnetter - that is a spectacular Jackmanii!

I agree, it looks tremendous. Must have given it all the right care.

I think mostly it's because it's twenty years old. They do seem to get bigger with age.

One of my plants seems to like its spot it has new growth, I think it grows an in inch or two a day. Do I leave it be or do I prune it back?

Pinching will produce more vines and I haven't a clue how you have treated it up to this point. If you have already been pinching then at this point in the season, I would be tempted to leave it be and see if you get blooms. Late winter/early spring prune it back severely and then start pinching again to stimulate more side shoots.
