3rd Mme Julia Correvon! It was a first year bloomer for me last year. :0)

Julia Correvon last two years, then had wilt and disappeared and it has never come back. Niobe is my pick. A wonderful velvet look to it.

I LOVE my Niobe! Very dark blue red w/o any pink tones to it. This is group 2.

For group 3's, I like Walenburg & Gravetye Beauty; once again the blue reds, not the pinky or orange reds. New to me so I can't say how great they grow.

I have Ville de Lyon that I am so so about because it is a pinky red. It is advertised as a red, but I see it to be pink. I actually have it planted close to the Niobe & only the MERE outer edges MAY come close to the Niobe. It gets powdery mildew in my yard.

Beauty is all in the eye of the beholder, therefore, go check out COTW & do a search with red as the tepal color & the pruning group you are looking for. Come back with a list & I bet any one that has had experience with that particular cultivar will give you feed back. There are so many reds out there it is unbelievable.

Actually, Charlotte, my Julia Correvon got wilt last year and hasn't come back this year. I'm still hopeful for next year, though, because the roots are nice and healthy. How long ago did yours bite the dust?

My Niobe and Mme. Julia Corevon aren't really a "red" red but I guess they are as red as a clematis gets?? Niobe is more of a reddish burgundy here and MJC is a pinky red. Is it climate? I ordered Amanda Marie this year, I want to see how "red" she is :-).

Amanda Marie was more of a deep dull dusky pink for me in 06&07, but wilted back early this year & hasn't come back. If I ever get the time I will dig it up & see if roots are rotted. I didn't like it enough to want to replace it with another of the same. Would rather put one of the type 3s I'm getting from chalk hill in its spot.

I was admiring pics of Ruutel...anyone have this one, and if so, how do you feel about it? You can't always tell from pics, but it looks like a very pretty red.
