That browning of the leaves is common with certain varieties. Some cultivars will respond with new growth if they're in full sun, kept watered and stimulated with some liquid fertilizer maybe once a week. It's too late for me to do that in my zone, but perhaps not where you are.

On the other hand some varieties (Jackmanii for me) do nothing if I prune them midseason. The viticellas respond best to this for me.

My type II's respond well to this treatment but it takes a few weeks for them to get going again.
