'Celtic Skies'

I am a very novice Clematis grower. Only have three planted around my birdhouse poles that were put in this spring and I'm sure they are a very basic plant - purple "Natascha." So, not knowing much about the Clematis family in general, I have a very specific question...

My husband just recently got me started with some roses planting a "Heritage garden" with Irish and Scottish named cultivars of various plants. I was recently going to order a double flowered rose and purple colored Clematis called "Celtic Skies" on the Michigan Bulb site. But of course when I went back this week, it says that this plant is no longer available. I can't find any other site anywhere with a Clematis by that name, so I'm sure it was a made-up name by MB.

Does anybody have any idea if this "Celtic Skies" has another name or where else I might be able to find it?

Thanks for any help.

I bought this same plant from Michigan bulb just this year. It comes potted and is approx. 4 inches tall when shipped. Mine has taken off like wild-fire, and definately didn't cost $30! :) I have ordered many things off of Michigan Bulb, and have rarely had any problems and when I do they always are very helpful in replaceing and/or crediting my account. Plus, with MB you don't have to keep shipping papers or anything in case something happens to the plant. They keep a record of everything you have ever ordered, and all you have to do it call. I would suggest calling during the week before 5pm eastern though, after that it goes to some offshore call center. :(

I did a search on clematis on the web. They have 3400 varieties of clematis listed in their data base. Celtic skies is not listed in it.

I don't know what it might have been, but consider yourself lucky that you were prevented from wasting your money by buying from Michigan Bulb Co. By personal experience & reading comments on Dave's Garden Watchdog site, that is one of the companies you do NOT want to buy from.

Just for the heck of it, I looked it up on their website.

And $30 and they don't even tell you if what they send will be bare root or a tiny pot. Page 2 had a cheaper ($10) "Sangria" clem, that also is not listed on COTW. Perhaps they are unregistered seedlings of something or other.

Well, it seems that the watchdog is getting some positive responses about this company now, maybe ownership changed?

Unfortunately that link didn't work for me so I'm going to go off of memory because I don't feel like looking it up at this hour. It started with a company buying Jung's nursery here in WI as well as Spring Hill Nursery & several others. They ALL had bad reviews on Garden Watchdog & a poster researched & found that they were all owned by the same company. This was about 2 yrs ago I found this info. I sure hope things have changed. Jung's has been around for as long as I can remember. As a kid my Mom used to get their gardening catalogs & back then had a great reputation. It sounds promising that they have been getting good reviews lately. I would still not buy anything that wasn't registered at $30 a pop. If they said it was a seedling of theirs that would be another story...appropriate info for the buyer to have.

Gurneys has this plant as well, but it only ships in the spring. Have a look at http://gurneys.com/80947/p/80947/ .
I want one myself and I have always had good relations with Gyrney's. It does state that this item, Celtic Skies Clematis, will ship in the spring of 2012. Save your online invoice just in case, and good luck. It is a very beautiful flower and I for one am looking forward to mine!

Vyvyan Pennell is also sold in parts of the US as Celtic Skies.

I too have ordered from Michigan bulb. I have had great success with the perennials and clematis I have gotten from them. If I have received anything in poor condition they have credited me. Everything is garunteed. Love them and love saving $$
