Smaller flowers are very common on young plants. Until they get their roots established in the ground, the flowers can appear very different in size and coloration from what they look like when the plant is mature. Bigger, more mature plant means more roots to absorb nutrients and more leaves for photosynthetic acitivities. Both of these cause the plant, leaves and flowers to become as large as they should. A young plant often has not had time to do this so the flowers are smaller. Same thing can happen when a clematis blooms the first time in the spring with larger flowers and then again later in the summer with smaller flowers.
