I have clematis "Asao" and you'll love it!!...Congrats...Jeanne

Oh wonderful, Jeanne, do you have any pics? I'd love to see what this is going to look like eventually, but I can't find any pics of the whole plant. All the pics I'm seeing are just close-ups of the flowers.

Jeanne - I'm glad to hear you like 'Asao.' On impulse, I picked up 1 for $5 early in Summer & potted it up. I'm ready to plant it now, if I could just decide where. I'm thinking about putting it on the opposite side of a pergola from 'Comtesse de Bouchaud.'

Violetta, I too have it but it is not one of my better performers. Ramona, which it is planted with, is a more prolific bloomer for me than Asao. Here's the only picture I have of it.

I have to agree with Miguel that clematis "Asao" is one of those that takes longer to get established and not as vigorous as some..it blooms VERY early in Spring for me and then again early fall..mine should be blooming again anyday now..but, it's such a divine color...be patient with this one..fortunately mine has never wilted on me..Jeanne

Jeanne, glad to see that I am not the only one that thinks that Asao is not a prolific bloomer. It is also common for mine to bloom very early in the spring. I rarely get any rebloom on this clematis but I haven't tried cutting it back since it is coplanted with Ramona which does have a lot more blooms when it does bloom and does rebloom for me off and on all summer.

Ugh, maybe there was a reason these were the only two reasonably alive looking clematis left. Jeanne, any tips for getting the second bloom on yours?

I am going to imagine she is going to say whack it back, fertilize and water it, and cross your fingers! LOL

Violetta, just remember that all clematis do not grow the same in all gardens. It might like the PNW atmosphere much better than it likes the south! LOL Just give it a chance and if it fails to perform for you, you can always remove it and get something else!

I confess that I dug Asao up and gave her away. She was not vigorous and faded badly in sun. This photo is on a cloudy day before fading. I do not have any distance shots of the entire vine because there really wasn't anything to photograph.

Mine is in part shade...so it doesn't fade as badly as BOS..I've had mine in the garden for 3 years now and I hard pruned it the first two years of it's life...this year ..I didn't prune..just fertilized and watered...It has given me bloom very early in Spring and again in late September/early Oct..I think I should move mine to an area that gets more morning sun...Violetta..don't fret...she is very sweet..one that I have that is more vigorous and heavier bloomer which has a heavy flush of blooms in late Spring and off and on the rest of the season is Clematis "Pink Champagne" aka "Kakio"..it's a pruning group 2 as well...I treated her like a 3 the first couple of years and left her alone this year..she is similar to Clematis "Ramona" in that she blooms off and on all season ..a delicious clematis..you must have that one if you like florescent pinks...Jeanne

Hmmm. Will be interesting to see what happens next year... my balcony faces south and gets full sun all day, so I'm probably going to wind up with some seriously faded blooms. But at least I got 'em cheap!
