Clematis Bare Roots

I was forced to move a 5+ year old clematis plant due to property line issues. Due to the dryness of the rootball, no dirt was protecting the roots, so I divided the root ball. Questios: How many roots to each division? Best potting method since it is fall and not spring? I plan to pot these individually and bury the pots in a holding bed. Shade??? help appreciated! Thanks!

I once divided an Elsa Spath when I moved it. The rootball was pretty big. I divided it in half. It took 2 years to come back and still is not doing as well as it could. I don't believe I'll ever divide a clematis again. I also once divided a fair size integrifolia into 4 pieces and lost all but one of them. ---Never again.

Katie..so glad you spoke to that subject..as I had wondered myself about dividing..I most certainly would take advice from a Pro like you...I will NEVER divide mine either..LOL..thanks hon...hope all is well in your world...Jeanne
