New growth on Hagley Clematis

I bought a Hagley Hybrid this spring and planted it on my chain link fence. It did fine for a while and even bloomed a little. During July, however, the rabbits chewed on the main stem, causing the plant to die. About a month later, I saw a new shoot come up from the ground. Right now it is only about 6 or 7 inches tall. I'm worried that it will die over the winter since it's still so small. Is there anything I can do to protect it?

Jill..You don't have to worry about your Clematis..they can survive your winter...just make sure they are mulched well...I hope you don't have your rabbit problem anymore for Clematis "Hagley's Hybrid" is a beaut!!It's a pruning group 3 so you will have to hard prune it this coming late winter/early spring and give it some Rose fertilizer at the same time..goodluck with your Clematis...Jeanne

Jeanne- Thanks for your help. I feel better now. And yes, I will be taking precautions against the rabbits next year. I don't want to lose any more clematis to them!
