citrus help

Hi all. some what new to citrus have about 15 varieties 3 navel, 3 grapefruit, 3 Satsuma, 2 lemon, 1 each of page mandarin lime tangerine I think thatÂs it. Looking for different types to try hard to find unusual types here in New Orleans. All my trees are grafted to trifoliate root stock except on lemon grown from a branch of another Meyer lemon which I was told doesnÂt need to be grafted. Also looking for flying dragon rootstock and may try grafting if I can find rootstock.

will any of them ship to louisiana?

I'm not sure about the shipping to Louisiana, but Evergreen Gardenworks has Flying Dragon. Also notice the variegated Lisbon lemon they offer. If you're looking for something unusual, please consider it. I love mine. It's quite productive, with striped young lemons which turn solid yellow at maturity. They are not pink inside, but I've found them to be just as juicy as store bought lemons. The leaf variegation includes a bright yellow which is absent from the variegated Eureka lemon variety. There is a leaf picture on their citrus list.

Here is a link that might be useful: citrus catalog with 2750 Citrus trifoliata Flying Dragon

Nospice, the only places they don't ship to is AZ, TX, FL, and CA,...otherwise you shouldn't have any problems..
Briteleaf isn't shipping at the time because there's a Canker problem in Fl, and she (owner) doesn't want to take chances,.
AcornSprings and Harris have nice trees..Acorn's are fuller than those at Harris...Toni

Check my reply on Kaffir Lime thread about Jene's Tropicals in Fla.(www.tropicalfruit.com) Very reasonable. I have a number of different fruits from them. One of my favorites is Red Pummelo. The fruit is huge, almost as large as a soccer ball. Much sweeter than grapefruit. It's either on trifoliate or citrange rootstock. Not only that, but it is a beautiful tree with larger leaves than any citrus I've seen. It's taken temperatures down to 24 degrees with no leaf burn. The fruits ripen in Nov and Dec.

Jene's tropicals doesn't ship to Louisiana. It's on their checkout page if i remember correctly. Briteleaf doesn't ship to Louisiana either, at least that's what she told me in reply to my e-mail. I know that some places in california ship rootstocks here, but that is in large quanities. gary

I live in Lafayette and have ordered quite a few fruit trees from Jene's over the years but haven't checked thenm out lately.

nospice, have you checked out any of the nurseries in
Plaquemines Parish? Almost all the citrus trees for sale in Baton Rouge seem to come from Belle Chase or Port Sulpher.
Ted, when you say fruit trees, are you talking about citrus? I tried to buy a dwarf ponkan on Flying Dragon from Jene's and at that time it was no citrus to La. Got the same response from Flying Dragon Nursery in Jacksonville, Fla. According to LSU, the best rootstock for down here is Trifoliate Rubidoux, because of it's moisture tolerance, but they also say that most of the nursery trees are on Swingle. Every time I ask what rootstock their trees are on, no one knows. I live in a subdivision, and I wanted to plant them in the yard, so I'm limited on space. The Flying Dragon seemed like the perfect choice. I have to admit though, it seems kind of crazy to buy a tree off the internet for $20.00 plus shipping when the produce stand down the street sells them for $13.00 gary

I just checked out Briteleaf's homepage, and as for shipping, the only states mentioned that a citrus cannot be shipped to, is Tx, Ca, and Az..there's no mention of other states..However, Anna is not shipping trees until fall.
I also checked Acornsprings.com and Harriscitrus.com but couldn't find any info pertaining to where plants couldn't be shipped..

Gary, I agree with you about buying locally, but one good thing about buying from the internet is, there are numerous varieties of trees that may not be sold nearyby..For instance, here in Il, the most common citrus is Calamondin..Unless I want to drive 25+ miles away, this one nursery sells a few citrus, but their cost is still more than if I ordered online including shipping, Toni

Gary, As you say, I am sure Trifoliate orange would do well in a state like Louisiana. It grows well and vigorously on good flat woods and hammock lands, and particularly where they are underlaid with clay. It needs soils well supplied with moisture and capable of retaining it. Trifoliate should NOT be used as a stock on high, dry, or calcareous soils, for in such situation I find it to be a failure. Trifoliate root systems is VERY GOOD, as the roots penetrate well, and fibrous roots are produced abundantly. Whenever a vigorous scion is grafted onto trifoliate orange roots the root system becomes even more vigorous, and strange to say in most cases the rootstock will out grow any variety worked on it. I think this happens because a evergreen scion is growing on a deciduous roots stock. The fruit produced on trees grown on trifoliate rootstock is usually of fine quality, even in the first crops. Almost all of my trees are on trifoliate roots. - Lastly, I doubt any out of state nursery will ship to Louisiana, Briteleaf and Harris Nurseries included. Millet

Toni, you are correct about it not being on their homepage, Briteleaf's no shipping to Louisiana was stated in a reply to an e-mail I sent them. You are also right about buying off the internet, many varieties available.
I did buy an ice cream banana off the internet, received a healthy 12 inch plant for $11 plus shipping, and the next day found plenty at the nursery down the street that were 6-8 ft tall for $15. lesson learned-check local nurseries first.

Millet, thank you for your response. I plan on spending one day this fall down in Plaquemines Parish visiting their commercial nurseries. I know they sell their citrus and their trees to the public. They also sell at the Farmer's Market in N.O. I beleive that where they sell there specialty citrus, blood oranges, Ponkans, grapefruits, etc. Just waiting for fall so i can get a case of satsumas

Gary, your very welcome. Even though citrus nurseries might not actually state their shipping policies on their web site, I would be VERY SURPRISED to find ANY out of state citrus nursery that would ship into Louisiana. - Millet

Gary, well, I'm sorry then..I've never seen LA listed as a state plants cannot be shipped to.
I'm not sure where this nursery is, but there's one more place you can try... www.worldplants.com Click on online catalog, then a window will pop up..Click OK..
Hit C and scroll down to citrus..You'll find Poncirus (FD) there..Toni

I think there is some kind of agricultural regulation that prevents citrus growers from shipping to other states that also have a citrus industry. Thats how I found out TX has a citrus industry. I am glad to hear that Acorn Springs Nursery just in case I decide to order something from them. Although I dont know if I get enough sun on my balcony to get much fruit.

Lydia, if I can keep citrus indoors here in the Midwest, total 20, I'd bet you can surely grow them in TX. :) Toni
