Dividing Madame Julia Correvon

I have one of these that's huge and has really overgrown it's space. Is it possible early next spring to dig out the clump and divide it with a sharp spade? I could get probably 6 or so nice size clumps of roots doing this.

Although I haven't done it with clematis on purpose, I'm sure you could. I dug out a Jackmanii last year not intending to leave any of it behind and this year a piece of it started growing.

When moving an established clematis I find that rooted pieces of it often fall away leaving me with several of that variety.
No need to cut the rootball with a spade.
