Clematis for partial shade and north walls

BTW, 'Rooguchi' is not in the list.

Rooguchi is always full of powdery mildew in my garden.

The ones which have done best in shade for me are Alabast (white), Rhapsody (gorgeous blue), and Silver Moon (white with mauvish coloring).

I'm in the PNW and I have many of my Clems in partial shade.

I would NOT put Rooguchi in the shade. It mildews in full sun here. In fact every one of my integrifolias mildewed last summer.

I have Hagley Hybrid, Richard Pennell, Charissima, John Warren in more shade than others because they faded badly in more sun. I know Nelly Moser is one that can take a lot of shade but don't grow it.

My neighbor's have mature Doug Firs and almost no part of my yard is full sun.

Rather than duplicating the question, I thought I would piggyback on this one.

I too would like a Clematis or similar climber for a north facing location.

Is this tall enough for a clematis? Are there variaties that would be better than others? Is this enough room for an early blooming and late blooming variety to prolong the interest?

To the original poster, Clematis armandii is typically recommended as a shade loving clematis in areas where it is hardy (including the PNW) and is often grown on north facing walls, trellises, etc. in this area. My own is growng on the northeast corner of my home plus shaded by a large apple tree and is thriving and blooms profusely each spring.

To the piggyback poster - I assume you're going to be moving that planter (beautiful job, btw) out to the edge or side of the deck? That far in under the overhang is going to seriously limit what can be grown as there is just not enough light. While there are a great many clematis and other vines that will grow in part shade, no direct sunlight will deter or eliminate blooming. Does this area receive any direct sunlight?

I'd also be concerned about it getting enough water under an overhang and in a planter. You may end up having to water it instead of relying on natural rainfall.
I think you could certainly find clematis varieties that would work on the structure, which is very lovely. You'll just have to pick shorter ones, but there are more and more of those now. Do you know about the website Clematis on the Web? It's a great resource.
