Hi All!

I checked FAQ but didn't find the answer to this question.

I live in Z5 Central New York State. Like many along the North East Coast and Inland we've had some unusual warm and very wet weather this Fall Season. Two weeks ago a storm front came through with 50 mph winds and knocked over (actually broke in half) one of my Clematis trellises.

It was still heavily laden with leaf growth and my problem is I don't want to see it laying there with the chance of heavy snow or snow piled on it all Winter. I have the base wrapped with leaves and burlap up to about 18" from the ground in order to protect from the elements and rabbits.

My question is, can I cut back several feet (or at least a few feet) of growth without doing any possible damage (?) or should I wait 'til colder weather sets in? I usually wait 'til Spring to do any cutting back.
