It's OK for shade but that's quite a lot of shade :-) Most clems, even the so-called shade lovers, would prefer at least 4 hours of sun to encourage blooming. Much less and you'll still get healthy growth but minimal flowering. And yes, 'Guernsey Cream's compact size makes it an excellent candidate for a container.

gardengal: I know my 2-3 hrs sun isn't much good for clematis. I have a sweet autumn on my back fence facing north, and although it flowers (somewhat) in Sept. it looks nothing like the beautiful clouds of small white flowers on a neighbor's trellis. I thought that maybe the guernsey cream was an exception to the rule, but now I know it isn't. Thanks for the advice. Miriam

Miriam, I know that this is a completely different clematis and not even the same color, but my late mother grew Nelly Moser on the North side of her house, and while the bloom amount was not huge, it was very acceptable and a wonderful color. Not much help, but thought I'd throw in my two cents. Merry Christmas. Kat

I grow Guernsey Cream in quite a bit of shade; close to your amount and it blooms beautifully. Some of the striped cltvrs lose their stripes in the shade. Silver Moon is another one that does well for me in shade.
