grafting start

17 years ago

A quick update on the lessons. Potted seedlings and plugs have arrived.

Don't have pictures of the plugs, but here is one of the Brooks Tree Farm seedlings.

10 Pinus sylvestris, 10 Pinus strobiformis, 24 Picea pungens ($1.25 apiece, $20 shipping).

Mini-greenhouses: grafted trees, wrapped in clear plastic baggies.

Small hole in bottom for drainage, small hole in top for breathing, and small hole in side for the watering can spout.

Morning sun, afternoon shade. Trees are positioned so that graft faces toward sun.

Getting around to some of the names.

Picea pungens 'Kenosha'

{{gwi:657031}}

Picea pungens 'Lucretia'

{{gwi:657032}}

Pinus flexilis 'Cindy'

{{gwi:657033}}

Picea pungens 'Miss Colorado' (bonsai, broom on lower left branch)

{{gwi:657034}}

Pinus banksiana 'Angel'

{{gwi:657035}}

I'm not sure if I have the terminology correct, but I think this is a Picea pungens krummholz, presented as a macro bonsai.

A 400lb transplant; probably a few hundred years old.
