Why are you using the Gritty Mix for ferns?

I would strongly encourage you to use the 5-1-1 mix, which is what I use for ferns in containers.
When I re-pot, I cut off the lower third of the root-ball and I shave off an inch or two on the sides.
Then I loosen the soil and add fresh mix. Here's a link to a Thread on how I re-pot one of my ferns:

Although I describe the mix as "gritty" in the Thread, it is not The Gritty Mix. It is a variation
of the 5-1-1, using bark, lava rock, and perlite (with some extra bark dust instead of peat moss).

I've never grown a Staghorn, but I do suspect that it might grow better on a board mount.

Thanks! I guess I was leaning towards the gritty simply because I wasn't planning on repotting them again anytime soon. I'm new both to ferns and to the whole gritty/5-1-1 deal. I really appreciate the info!

I've had my Chainfern in the 5-1-1 for nearly 3 years, so you needn't re-pot too often, either.
