Ferns and Bulbs and Sunlight

I have just turned my front yard into a woodlawn-themed garden, which I should have done in the first place. Everything is now thriving in this area of four to five hours of sunlight at best. I have a large planter box at the entry to the garden. I'm wondering if I could plant Japanese Painted Ferns in it to showcase all summer and then bulbs to come up for a spring effect. Suggestions?
