It might be moss but I'm guessing lichen. I guess if you can keep it alive and it grows spores then you'll know it's moss. Either way nice find.

It's a lichen, old mans beard, usnea sp, I'm guessing usnea strigosa. Grows very slowly, won't produce any obvious fruiting bodies, so it's hard to tell if a specimen is dead or alive. Interesting. Likes high humidity and is very sensitive to air pollution.

If that fell out of a tree you might try mounting it on some bark with fishing line.

More recently, there was another wind storm and I found more downed branches with the same little guys attached. I agree that it appears to be Usnea Strigosa, or something close based on photos I found on the Internet. Unfortunately, as an apartment dweller, I don't have a lot of options to care for these guys. I'm thankful to discover this lichen though, I feel like my world is a little bit bigger. :)
