Question about Cuttings

I am expecting cuttings from a few generous people (thanks chena & linda) and have a few cuttings from my own 2 brugs rooting. My question is can I expect them to bloom this summer or not? The cutting from my NOID white were taken from above the y and my cutting from the peaches&cream was taken from a side shoot it started putting out.

I'd be almost certain that the cutting taken from above the Y will bloom next summer and there's a good chance that they others will as well, especially if they get a good head start over the next several months. Just make sure you feed them regularly over the growing season. Good luck.

Karyn is right about the feeding part. When I first got mine it had Y'ed but never bloomed til I started reading on here about them. I have never seen a plant that needs so much water and fertilizer in my life but they are worth it. Feeding like that would burn up many plants but these seem to need it.

Hey that reminds me of another question, should I fertilize the cuttings through the winter or wait til they are outside when it is warm enough? Or when they reach a certain size?

I'll let the more experts answer this one but I was told I could give mine 1/4 strength fertilizer once they started growing good sets of leaves and are rooted but have just tried it since some of mine were looking pale so don't know how they will like it yet.

Do not feed over the winter months. Feed them once they are set outside after a week.

See (grin) I told you not to listen to me, lol. I started mine outside and they were nice and green but have been getting pale. They are still very little can you remove the leaves or just let them fall off on their own and grow new indoor ones?

I'll occasionally give my variegated and other mature brugs that I keep growing inside through the winter a very diluted feeding but as a rule they don't get fed until spring.

Karma.... do not feed?? but I want giant plants that flower this comming summer? got to give them a head start under HID lights and fertilize ! No?

I was wondering about fertilizing too. F4F mine are really pale too, I did give some of the rooted cuttings very diluted fish emulsion. They seem to be greening up & getting bigger. I will listen to the experts though.

I was wondering if epsom salt would be ok to use? I used that when mine was outside and it greened up nicely. Is that considered a fertilizer?

F4F - epsom salt is a fertilizer - Magnesium Nitrate.
Which is good for a quick greenup, but don't rely on it as your only source of nitrogen. Exclusive and long term use will probably cause your stems to be possibly weak and whimpish. We always make sure that Calcium Nitrate is also used. 2 parts Cal to 1 part Mag in addition to whatever your normal balanced fertilizer may be. The CalMag will promote strong stems. If your plants are dormant then you should not feed them. If your plants are ACTIVELY growing in a GH or under growlights, then they should be fed. Probably 1/2 to 1/3 to 1/4 what you would feed them in the summer - depends on how active they are!

    Regards,

    Jack

Jack, sorry but you are incorrect,
Epsom salt is Magnesium sulfate -it contains no nitrogen.
And you are right it is a fertilizer to be used in certain circumstance that require its use.

I agree that with calcium added you are covering allot of bases for healthy plants.
If you were to use calcium nitrate and Magnesium sulfate you have a great mixture used sparingly as you mentioned.

Oxmyx - you are absolutely correct, and I knew it - must have been lack of coffee this AM. The point I was trying to make was the use of Mag should also be balanced with the use of Cal. Glad you caught it.

Jack nice to see ya around.. Ya'll he has wonderful plants!!!! I know I have bought a few...LOL

No feeding do you hear me!!LOL Granted they are in the greenhouse and maybe a small shot will get them though the winter months out there but one just wants them to stay dormant as much as possible. Believe me it's what is the best for the plant as they reward you come next year with many blooms!!
oxmyx, my love if you treat them like a friend I'm sure they will go crazy with blooms in the spring. One needs their rest and not only brugs are we talking about. One needs to know when the last frost is and count back 4 weeks to know just when it's okay to start pushing!
There is a difference from leaves grown outside compared to the leaves grown inside this is why I strip ours off before moving them in or out. Ya know they grow back quickly!

well I was starting to get a bit concerned, even without fertilizer these things are going crazy, and will outgrow their area in no time. I just got my light set up (400w MH ) and now the big ones are under it - Man is it bright!

So Karma, wait to push them in say.... March? last frost here is about the 25 of April.

Hi Chena!! and thanks for the plug!!!!

I don't want to step on any toes, however, if you are going through the time and expense to heat a GH and/or buy and maintain gro-lights it would be foolish to needlessly stress your plants by not feeding them when they want to grow. Is that not the purpose of a heated GH and grow lights? 1/2 to 1/4 amount of fert. would not be considered pushing, but maintaining. If you want to put and keep them in dormancy then ---YES ---- no fert. no light, little heat and little plain water. I happen to prefer to keep what I can alive and growing throughout the winter. There are enough dormant things outside.

LOL What a wonderful topic since I don't have a clue as to what I'm doing with my brug cuttings. I'm just trying to follow some of ya'lls advice.

So far I have not lost any and I've been using a dropper and putting one drop of S.T. and one drop of fertilizer in the water I'm rooting them in. I root no more than 2 cuttings of the same brug per glass. Needless to say the bar area and counter space is completely covered with glasses. Thanks to all my wonderful Brug Friends.

I also spray them once a week with a 3 in 1 Fungicide. Knock on wood, so far so good. I will say however that some of my small cuttings already need to be repotted. I may have more brugs than I'll have space for come mid February or March. Once the weather warms up I'll have plenty of places to plant them. I think 35 acres is enough. (grin)What about less light for the one's I'm starting in the house? I have some in here and some out in the greenhouse.

What about that Strangle thingie. Does anyone here have it? I would hate to get that stuff here and not know it. I looked at some of those pictures with it and I really could not see what they were talking about in some of them.

    Happy Gardening Ya'll

Now I have to go find some calcium. Never seen it before. If this got answered I didn't see it. I started a bunch of cuttings outside several weeks ago and they were leafiing out nicely but not really large yet when I brought them in. Can those leaves be removed to regrow indoor ones or let them fall off naturally. Another thing I had a tiny green worm eating my indoor cuttings this morning. Where on earth did he come from? The little monster had cut off several leaves before I spotted him and is the exact color of the leaves. If I had not misted him and he wiggled I'd never have seen him.

I second that, Chena. Jack sends out really nice cuttings, and I see he is offering a Bundle of
Brugs on E-Bay. Check it out, folks. I wonder if one of the kids would consider running away from home, so I could have more room for more Brugs! Gloria

I use broken up oyster shells dug into the top few inches of soil and scattered on top to add calcium. I have the kids pick them up at the beach. They seem to help and they look nice also. It's not a quick fix and the calcium leaches out slowly.

Is it a good idea to use rooting hormone on the cuttings or just let them do it on their own?

    Hi,

Generally not needed. I do use it sometimes on green tip cuttings that are put in soil.

    Jack

Karyn, wouldn't crushed egg shells also provide calcium?
Kristy, the green worm ,I think its called a tomato worm. If it is hot outside, just sprinkle self rising flour on your plants( also works on vegs.)the worms will eat the flour and then explode in the hot sun. In the winter months, you will have to pick them off your plants, best time is in the evening, with a flashlight. I call it going hunting. Barbra,

I'm planning on feeding a few in the green room.

But even the ones here in the house - at a moderate 67 to 68 are busting out with foliage. (In the water bucket)

    I don't have a choice - they're goin' gangbusters - whether I wanted them to or not.

I'm going to try some very, very diluted 10-15-10 Schultz on a couple. For indoor and outdoor plants.

And going to mix up a spray of anti stress. (Mite control)

I can't pretend they're going slow - I can't even see into the water bucket right now. There is too much foliage. Big leaves, I mean 5 and 6 inch leaves.

Might as well get a couple growing (not pushing) but give them some food because they seem to want to grow. Then I'll see where I'm at between the ones I fed and the ones that I didn't.

Dweeb, you doing ok up there? I heard ya'll were having bad ice storms. I know what you mean about the ones in water. Mine are growing bigger faster than the ones in pots too.

    F4F:

Thank you so much for asking. Ok - shhhhh, don't wanna jinx us - but - we got very, VERY lucky. There was a gap between those two monstrous ugly storm clusters as they rolled through - maybe 45 miles wide. The county I live in - we threaded the eye of the needle on this one. . . .(knock wood!)

All it did was rain and then sprinkle - and we had some wind that dried the cars off BEFORE all the water froze so there weren't sheets of ice on everything.

And then, it was 41 yesterday! Just gorgeous! Everything melted.

But places north of us - schools closed - people are without power - it's awful. I feel terrible for them.

I haven't heard lately but I didn't think anything else was in store for us other than just cold.

People in Oklahoma - there have been 70 deaths already due to carbon monoxide poisoning - open flame heaters, etc. being used indoors.

I feel really terrible for them - man they got hammered.

There saying it could be another 4 days for the people north of us in Illinois to get power.

Anyone see the picture of all the trees that just got crushed with ice? I hope some more warm 40s come through here to melt some of that stuff for them.

Dweeb:Glad to hear storm more or less passed you by. Have been thinking on ya and worried. My heart goes out to those suffering from the weather. Here in so-called sunny California we know what havoc Ma Nature can bring. People and animals alike suffer. Hope the season can turn into a more happier one for those hit with the cold. Gloria

Glad you got got missed by the worst of it. Our friend's relatives arrived from Illinois today since they didn't know when they would get their power back they just came early for the Christmas visit. I feel so sorry for all those people with no heat!

F4F: Glad they got out and went somewhere warm.

Good for them! I hope they enjoy!

We're supposed to get 2-5" now between today and tomorrow.

Yeckoooo. . .gotta get the ice off the deck - it started to melt then froze again. I'm slipping around trying to get to the green room to check on the cuttings! LOL. . .

Be careful out there! Edna is already missing. Poor people came down here to get warm and it supposed to be 28 tongiht but will start warming back up the high 50 and 60's next week.

    Ewwwwwww - 28 in texas? Yuck. . .

We got 6" of snow last nite. Glad I went and got my shopping done for my secret santa and gift exchange at work.

Harry & Davids (grin) ALWAYS a hit at work.

I'm excited - I'm going to pot the new cuttings I received from that collection today - slodging through the snow.

Wow - 50s and 60s - zonal envy again. (grin) It's not like I envy your heat - but I get the same heat here in Illinois also - grrrrrrrrrrrr. . . .

What was really funny? I was trying to walk around all the people at the mall (women with children who obviously didn't want to be shopping) and my ankle went PINGGGGGG! Thought Ohhhhhhhh nooooooooo. . . .not nowwwwwwww. . .(grin)

A woman with this stupid daughter in front of me with those "roller skate" tennis shoes on - this kid obviously wasn't too steady on them. I just wanted away from them. This kid was gonna fall on the escalator and take us ALL out. (grin) She was barely on her feet in front of me before we got on the escalator. . .what goes through people's minds?

Sorry for my off topic rant. I don't like "shopping" out there. I usually shop on line and have the stuff come to me. (grin)
