This is purple Irish sphagnum moss. It was collected in Ireland.

im posting a progress pic of the irish moss i planted couple of weeks ago , i keep giving him a moisture continuously.

Exactly what plant are we talking about? What is most commonly known as Irish moss, Sagina subulata, is not a moss at all. I am assuming that since these were seeds planted - moss doesn't reproduce from seeds - these are not true mosses but the Sagina.

Seed germination of Sagina needs consistently moist (not wet) soil and temps of 64-72F. Should take about 12-14 days.

Sagina subulata is a low growing mat-forming evergreen perennial often used as a groundcover. It produces tiny white flowers - true mosses do not flower. It also is not nearly as shade tolerant as most mosses. Should be grown in rich, well-draining soil in full sun to only part shade. The gold form, Sagina subulata 'Aurea', is known as Scotch moss.

You're right gardengal48 'cause moss has spores instead. So spraying it is fine but you could just water it like seeds.

Thats right , sagina subulata is not a real moss , it just called irish moss. i planted just 40 seeds in small Planter, and it took me within 14 days to start seeing the germination, the second photo i took with a plant microscop , and this photo (sorry about the quality) with camera, i dont know if this looks right, it doesnt looks at all like the google pic of irish moss, maybe i should've buy more then 40 seeds for it to look dense.

yea.. bought them on ebay for 1.82 â¬, didnt want to spend to much, given that is first time i dealing with that plant , wanted to see if it works.

Groundcovers are tricky. Even just growing grass in Kansas is hard because it gets fried in the sun if you plant in the spring. I grow sphagnum moss mostly indoors.

really ? .. im actually interested to grow spagnum, is it come in seeds ? i would love to know how did you get it from and under what condition you grow it.

No I never could get moss to grow from spores but I did find a supplier who knows how to harvest it sustainably. It likes distilled water and doesn't like dirt at all. Peat moss it can handle sometimes.
