A couple of important items are missing for identification: A fully mature frond with spore on it. Microscopic bisection of a stipe would also help :)
Your boyfriend did you well. It appears, without close examination, to be a Platycerium willinkii. A well grown specimen cultivated in warmth and high light. They're best grown in greenhouse like conditions, though do well outdoors in Hawaii, and with winter protection in So. Cal. and the deep south. Mounting on a board or in a basket is highly preferable, though it will prove a challange. Contact a local Staghorn specialist to help you next spring.
