Mike, are you still hanging around?

IF so, how are your citrus doing? Add any new? if so, what types?

How are temps holding there? Are your plants still outdoors or have you been hauling them in for winter?

Hope you prepared their living quarters. Cleaned, dusted, washed windows, vacuumed/if carpet or washed floors with strong detergent.

Hose plants before bringing inside, and don't forget to spray with Fish Emulsion, and/or my insect recepie before bringing inside.

Clean fans, humidifer, and lights. Buy extra humidifer filters and light bulbs.

Believe me, I've been doing a little cleaning each day. This way, when my plants are hauled inside, I won't have to worry about dirt/fur from pets...floors and shelves are clean, and plants can be set in their permanent home 'for winter.' Yuck. lol.

Take care, and I hope all is well...hugs, Toni

My Goodness, it is my oldest friend from the past:-)))))))

Hi....You know what? I keep telling many here that I owe a lot of my success to many here at the forums over the years, and many here have been having WONDERFUL results spraying their plants with FE to avoid pest's all summer Tony...This I OWE to you, and so do many others without even knwoing it...:-)NO scale, mealy, thrips, or mites!
It has helped many, and I just pass it on..It was what spared my trees from the onslaught of pest's for sure last winter before bringing them in..
Have you shared your pest recipe here? I think you should, since that too has cured a many bug issue!

Tony, it never occured to me to make my room almost sterile before bringing my plants inside..You are brilliant..I shall have to get on it as early as tomorrow..
I have already washed the floor, but have many other things to do with your help.

What kind of detergent would you recommend to wipe everything down with?

The temps here have been reaching the mid 60's and 70's by day, a couple of 80's, and 50's and 40's by night..My trees seem to like it as I can tell many are setting buds again...I have also stuck a few in my pop up greenhouse till about December..

My citrus are doing very well and they are all green as can be..:-)Have you seen our September pictures thread yet? You would like them...Everyone here has been doing pretty well with each other's support...

What do you think of Buylady's? She has come a long way Tony..

They will stay outdoors until the temps start to go below 40...That will be a sad day for all..lol

I added a new one to my collection..lol..It is a bearless lime..Is that what they are called? The leaves smell so strong...I love it..

I have been staying away from E-bay, have you?lol

Wait until you see my succulents and cactus I have up on the roof...I will take a picture of them and a couple of trees and post them here for you since you have helped me a lot..Be on the look out..I will even throw a few citrus in the mix..

How have you been..? I will e-mail you soon to make sure all is going well..Much love and it is so good to see you here again..I hope you plan on being here a bit more often..:-) You have so much to offer us here not to..

    Mike..:-))))))

Mike, thanks..your 'oldest' friend from the past?? lol.

Mike, I am sooo happy hearing you tried the Fish Emulsion and it kept bugs away. All I can say is, it worked miracles when I got a Scale infested Olive tree..not to mention, those darn demons attaching to neighboring citrus. What a disaster!!!

Actually, we owe the FE info to a wonderful woman in Fl who owns a citrus nursery. She's the one who told me their secret, how to keep scale and other insects away by spraying w/Fish Emulsion.
I realize there are other oils, BUT, another reason I prefer it is because, Fish Emulsion is an organic fertilizer. What better and safer way to fertilize, the last time of the year? Especially foliar feeding. And it doesn't burn roots or leaves.

So, you're as naughty as I am?? Ordering more plants, especially succulents..Oh Mike, remember I said I was going to stay away from Ebay? Well, after surgery, I was bored to death. The doc told me to stay off my feet, not even sit..So, while lying on the couch, using a laptop, since it was difficult typing emails, I went to Ebay and Accents.

You wouldn't believe all the succuelnts I got..oh my! I found one nursery, (Out of Africa) 'that's the name, lol' that sells the nicest PAchypodiums and Euphorbias..gotta love Euphorbias. I really wanted Euphorbia 'guillauminiana.' Don't try pronouncing it. lol
Another Euphorbia I got was E. 'aureoviridiflora.' This guy has green, upper leaves and deep purple bottoms.
Oh, there's too many to name and this is a Citrus forum. lol.
But one more succulent thing. lol. Have you ever heard of Boweia? Think that's the proper spelling. Well, I've been looking for one, at a reasonable price, and semi-large bulb, for years..Yesterday, I wrote to a nursery owner in IL, Shoalcreek, and asked if she had any. Sure enough, she has two types..A mini and standard..The standard is 4" @ 8.00..for some reason, the mini is 2" @ 13.00..I bought the 4".

But listen to this. I also won an Orange flower, Gardenia!! lol..It should be on its way..I think it's 2' tall, but not sure. We'll see..Orange flowers, Mike..Can't wait..I wish I'd won it in spring rather than 'almost autumn,' because of climate..it's going to need special attention. Lots of love.

I haven't had time to snap pics and place on my website. It'll take time, but eventually get done.

Your green house will be warm enough to keep semi-tropicals until December? That's amazing. Did you install a heater inside? Mike, if not, maybe you better invest in an electric heater..What plants are going to live inside?

What is September Pictures? No, didn't see it.

Do you mean you got a Bearss Lime??? Wow..how tall?

I hope Fl ends that stupid ban. I find it hard to believe Canker is still around..how many thousands of acres and trees did they burn? And still they say Canker is around? If that was the case, why is it, citrus nurseries are allowed to ship within FL??? I don't get it.

Don't worry about sending an email. We can discuss things here..lol..Toni..Toni, Mike not Tony..lol..how quickly we forget..lol..Toni

    Toni, Toni, Toni!!! man..lol

Yes, I was still wondering the same thing about Florida not being able to ship..What the heck? Do you know that not one nursery around here could get their hands on a Calamondin tree for me, not one...So yes, I ordered another from Four Winds and I will post a picture of that too..lol..Oh, Bears Lime..lol

I am here at work, and I hate not having access to my photobucket or certain pictures!

My greenhouse has a radiator heater in it I keep on medium all day and night, so when I open the doors just a bit on cold days, it still stays warm in there..Then when I close the doors at night, even when the temps drop down to the 20's, the temp stay up to the mid 50's to 60's by night! I love that thing...The only thing that would go against me is if the temps dropped way down into the 20's, and I lost electricity..That fear forced me to bring them in once lows were into the 20's often..Depending on how warm it is that day will determin how much a open the doors..

I house ALL my citrus, and certain gardenias...They seem to love all that light in there, especially combined with the sprayed water in there all over the leaves and walls and ground..It gets so humid and warm in there, even in the middle of December..I wish there was enough room in there for me to sit and read..
They respond well to this for sure..My tropicals, like pothos, begonias, palms, dracaneas, and others all are indoors now..All the plants that I do not have room for in that pop up and do not like temps dipping below the 55 degree mark are inside now...I sprayed loyaly with FE all summer and my plants never looked soo good!

I am posting a link to September pictures from all of us so you can do some catching up....

I am so happy you are making it through the tough times of your health..You are a strong dube...Who else is suppose to care for all your hundreds of babies..?:-)

Sometimes, I know this sounds morbid, but sometimes I wonder whom the heck is going to take over my plants when I can no longer care for them for any unexpected reason...Sheesh..Not a one person I know can even care for them when I take off for a few days properly!

Ok, you got me curious about Accents and that place in Africa!! I am looking that up when I get home...lol
Have you ever seen a WHITE GHOST" Euphorbia? O my goodness..I even picked me up a colorful variegated crown of thorns! Ok, wait till you see the pictures..be back here tomorrow and I will post them with some of my citrus. Please give me access to your pictures or post them hear, citrus or not, I would love to see your prides!

Toni, I can't wait till you see all the great results from all the help I have recieved from everyone here at these forums..I am ever so greatful for everyone I have met here. You and 4 others I have known for years...How long now, 4 years?

Take care and talk to you soon..

    HUG!!

    Mike, WOWOW!!!
Everyone's citrus are doing fantastic. I don't remember everone's names, but those who posted, Very Very Nice.
Buylady has two pics, one w/a date and a following that has root stock growing..it needs to be plucked.

Someone has a Variegated Kumquat..Lucky lucky..I'd love one. Didn't know 'quats were variegated.

Mike, it's been at least 4 yrs since the ban..you'd think the government would do something...I feel sorry for citrus owners, who depend on selling trees to pay bills.

Mike, do you have a pic of your green house? Is it inflatable, or one that needs building? You're lucky you can leave plants out till December. What type of heater?

Mike, it might sound morbid, but I wonder about the same thing...plus my birds and dogs..Sam is old...he'll be 91, in human years, Jan 30. But Coco is young.. He was abused as a puppy and I worry if something happens to me, some jerk will hurt him..I swear, I'd haunt them!!!

There's two E. 'White Ghost.' Are you talking about the one w/small roundesh leaves or longer??? Both are amazing. Cactus Limon, however it's spelled, had them on sale..I kill them..even though they're one of my favorite Euphorbias, they die..Aren't they pretty??

If you need the addy's of either nursery, let me know.
Mike, I have NO idea where plants will go once they're inside..lol..Too bad they can't stay outside year round. lol..then again, our homes would be bare, right?

As for my pics, it's easier going to my website. There are too many to post..lol..I dont know if i have any recent citrus pics...
Click on my name..scroll down a bit, and you'll see a www addy..that's my web addy..but like I said, I haven't added new plants, yet..it'll take time..I shouldnt even be online right now. Today would have been a good day to bring plants inside, but they're doing great out there, I dread bringing them in..lol

Okay Mike..take care,...yes, please post more pics, Toni

    Hi Mike & Toni,
I don't mean to bud in your conversation but ever since I've gotten into plants; I've also wondered who would take care of them...*sigh* I am glad I am not the only one who worries about this. Anyways, I'd love to see pics of your greenhouse Mike. I am getting one from Lowe's. It's the plastic kind and the only one I can afford, so it will have to do. What kind of greenhouse do you have?
Toni - I do apologize for not emailing ya. I don't have a good reason. But, I am very glad to see ya here in the citrus forum. I would love to see pics of your new babies. I have this problem of not knowing when to stop! This week alone; I should be receiving a maid of orleans, marang & ylang ylang seeds and next week; a jakfruit seedling... *sigh* Also, thanks for your suggestion on preparing our living quarters for our most precious tropicals and winter-sensitve plants. Lord knows I have too many to count! I wish you a speedy recovery Toni and hopes all is well in your part of the country.

Happy Gardening & overwintering... *sigh* lol

Great set-up on your roof-top Mike! And, as always, your plants are healthy and beautiful. Thanks for sharing your pics!
The greenhouse I saw at Lowe's looks very similar to yours. What kind of heater do you use in there?

Bo, please don't feel you're budding in. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join our conversation. Mike and I have been talking, mostly plants, a long time. He and I even traded once.
Yes, there's a lot to think about once gone. I worry what will happen to my plants and pets once I'm in, hopefully, heaven. :)
No one in my family knows how to care for plants, but even if they did, they surely wouldn't take all. My one brother has 4 or 5 plants, and he thinks that's a lot..lol. 300/400 is a tad too many for him. lol.

Don't feel bad about not emailing. I'm sooo behind answering emails, don't know where to begin.

What is Marange and do you mean, Jack Fruit? Even though I'm unfamiliar with both plants, I've heard of Jack Fruit, 'if the spelling is right. lol' Can you please send pics of these two trees?
Maid of Orleans is my favorite Jasmine. So fragrant and ever-blooming. Lasts years. Ylang-Ylang is also very pretty but difficult growing here. Is your YY a mini or standard?
Are YY's vines? It's been years since I've seen one. I have heard its flowers are extremely fragrant. I believe they make or made perfume from the flowers.

Bo, thanks for the good wishes. It's been a long time. Where are you located again???

Mike, WoWeeee! Look at those sux! Beautiful. You said they're on the roof? I see grass. lol. Do you have two green houses? Which plants are on the roof? Is your roof flat/level?
You've given me an idea. lol. I have a small section of roof..A window in the hallway, 'wish it was a door,' leads onto the roof. Only problem is the roof isn't exactly flat. Mike, what do you on windy days? Are plants on your roof heavy. Do you keep small plants on the roof, too?
It's something to consider next year..hmm. lol.

Mike, is that a Fig tree I see? And what is the plant in the last picture? The one that is structured like a Yucca. It's amazing, all your plants are Beautiful.
I like your Variegated Euphorbia 'Crown of Thorns,' too. Aren't they lovely? I messed up the last variegated, E. 'COT's. It arrived in beautiful condition. Because I couldn't walk or work on plants, most of the leaves dropped, and this guy was a true beauty. I'm tempted to get another, if one is available..It's at least 1' tall. Vivid colors..I know leaves will regrow, but I'm too impatient, plus w/winter coming, it'll take a while..
Your Jades are sooo, very colorful. I love them.
Mike, in the picture above the last, I think it's a Plumeria in white powder. What's the powder?

Mike, what size is your green house? Is it 6' or so? The reason I'm asking. Long ago, 'won't mention the year,' lol, I recall those or similar green houses for sale. Wanna know what they cost then? 19.99. lol. I wanted one soo bad, but didn't know where it'd go. At the time I lived in an appartment, and I doubt the landlord would permit a gh in 'his' yard. But they are nice. I am astounded you'll be able to keep plants out till Dec though..How thick is the plastic?
So, your plants are doing great..all those fruits on your citrus, too! Beautiful.

Sorry this post grew so long, but yesterday I spent the day cleaning, making room for outside plants to come inside. 3 rooms to go. Then go outside, and try to lift a plant w/o a thick-legged, gross, disgusting spider walking on my hand..EEEEEKKKKK!!!!! lol. Toni

    Awww, thank you Toni..:-)

Yup, I have one green house and a make shift one I made yesterday with 2x4's and painter plastic to protect my succulents up on the roof...That is on the back side of my house blocked by the wall to my plant room afcing the south..So it rests up against the house with no wind at it unless it blows from the south..I pretty much tie down the thing with heavy string up there..It can get pretty hot in their even in Novemeber without heat..It is heavy and not going anywhere, I hope that is..lol. It would be great if you could put some of your sun loving plants up there..Mines are loving it..I did have that pop up, up there last year, now that one is in my back yard with all my citrus, orchard, Bonsia, and gardenias in it, all but 3 or four anyway..Today, this am, I sprayed everything with FE this , and the only insect that stayed behind with that smell was the huge spider eating all the bugs that get caught in it's web in the corner of the pop up...lol

Yes, that is a fig tree..Another fun plant to grow..They are pretty much undestructable and not one pest likes this tree, thank God..lol

The one that looks like a yucca is actually a Aloe verra..:-)

If you want another variegated crown of thorns, come to be first, ok, I will help you..

The plumeria is in a pot, then situated into 5 inches of beautiful whie sand to hold it up from blowing it over..In the middle of the sun, when the sun is on that spot for more than 6 hours, I set all my succulents into it for a pretty look...I linked you a post of what I did just starting to fill the sand around my plants..

The pop up I think is 8x12. Just big enough for the amount of plants I have and my chair..Therefore, I need to stay far away from e-bay so I am not required to get an even bigger one for more babies..lol

The plastic is quite durable, thick..But I use a radiator space heater in there which keeps it quite warm at night and day..I also use fans...I also make sure to keep the plants up off the ground so the cold won't radiate into the pots...I LOVE LOVE to be able to do a massive spray of water all over them and smell the plants and see the humdity rise which they love!! You should see the new buds forming again..
I think the grapefruit should be ready to pick in a month..They are yellowing up..The limes are great for beer..lol

Big spiders on your hands? NO THANKS...Thank you Toni as always for all your years past and now for helping me out..

    Mike>:-))))))))))))))))

Aw, so you do have two green houses..You never answered, is your roof flat? lol
If there was a rail around my root, it wouldn't be bad, but with my luck, I'd climb out the window, and fall to the ground..oh brother..lol

Oh yes, gh's can get terribly hot. Esecially on sunny days..there were times mine got up to 121F degrees..Thankfully, no plants were inside. That's one reason plants that go in the gh will be the last to go in. Who wants roasted plants? lol

I adore your Aloe..where did you find it? I want one, same size as yours..it's so unusual. Common plants are out..now it's all rare, if you know what I mean??
Especially variegated. Red, pink, yellow. One reason I adore Aglaonemas. Beautiful colors.

Here's my Mistletoe Cactus/Epi..red in summer, green during winter.

    {{gwi:71712}}

I have to take a pic of my Night Blooming Orchid Cactus. Mike, it usually blooms once a year, in July..So far, it's grown 9 flowers..3 more new buds. The only problem is I wish flowers opened during the day. One time I brought it inside to take a pic, the next day the flower died. 'sigh'

Don't you love the sweet fragrance after spraying or hosing your gh? One word of caution. When you hose plants in the gh, 'w/the electric heater,' either cover or unplug and take outside. You don't want it getting wet. I have a thing about getting electrocuted, lol, but still be careful.

Mike, I haven't mentioned citrus, on this citrus forum. lol
So, I will. Because of my health problem, not one plant got fertilized in 2010..including Citrus. I feel guilty.
Don't know if I should bother now, although, they will get a foliar feeding of Fish Emulsion before coming in. Still, it's not the best time of year to fertilize.
Even though, most, not all citrus, bloomed and fruited. Oh well, let's hope 2011 is a better, healthier year. Toni

I want a mature full blooming night blooming cactus so bad..I also have a cactus that like to bloom after I have left for work, and die before i get home..What a pain...lol

You better start mentioning citrus...lol. You ahve some of the nicest ones I have seen, epsecially those in the tall black pots...Please post some more pictures here..Don't be shy, you have many worth seeing!

2011 better be better for our plants and for your health..

    Mike, your buttons? lol..What?

If you'd like, I can root a couple leaves from my NBOC and root for you. They're one of the quickest, growing Epis.
Home Depot sells mature Epi's, but haven't seen the night blooming.

Mike, I've really cut back snapping pics. In fact, I would like to take some before winter. The few citrus pics I took are on my website, but it's a pain finding them. Too many plants..lol

Yes, let's hope and pray 2011 is a better year for everyone. Peace on earth..no wars. One religion learns to respect other religions. No one is w/o food or a roof over their head. Everyone gets along despite color, religion, or political belief. Wouldn't that be great? And politicians change...turn honest! No more lies.
We, the world, need to wake up, change what we've destroyed over the years. Includng ourselves.

Okay Mike, have a great day/night..Toni

    Hello....Good morning..

I would LOVE that Toni..You know I would treasure that..
As long as you promise it will flower before I retire from this earth...

Toni,. what is your web site again? I know you told me some where..I love looking at your plants....If you get time anyway, please, at least post a picture of one or two citrus here for the sake of making this an even better thread..

Your right about that....Every politician makes empty promise, for centuries....lol..Now if you are looking for paradise, St Lucia where less than a few thousand live, no crime, and you can plant all the tropicals and citrus your heart desires around you...:-)

Toni: They pulled down all the citrus, bannana, and trees on the the mountian tops on one Carribean Island that I visit frequently..They are now in the middle of a drought and you can not smell the sweet fragrance when getting off the plain anymore..:-(..Blame that on on the Mayor of that island.

    Hi Toni and Mike,
    Toni,
So nice to hear from you again. We have really missed seeing you around here! I hope you are recovering and healing well from surgery. I sure as hell cn relate to that! The massive Improved Meyer lemon I bought about 2 weeks after having disc replacement surgery. LOL, I was told I had to stay out of cars until the staples in my abdomen came out. I still went to Erie and bought that tree. Then I drove back (with the staples still in!) and got it myself. Couldn't have anyone else go with me because the tree took up the whole front and back seat!!
I too have a night blooming cerous epi, and it is a sight when in full bloom! (Mike, I will also send you a couple cuttigns from mine.)

I know those ebay sights your talking about. I have visited both more than a few times but never have bought from them. My citrus seem to be doing pretty good. I wont have fruits on my Oro or my Keylime but I will have more than a dozen 'Dancy' tangerines and a bunch of meyer lemons. I did take a trip to Florida last summer and right across the room from where I stayed there was a citrus grove. That growve looked terrible! I felt so bad for the growers there. I didn't see very many citrus that looked healthy except for in garden centers and nurseries. I almost took my chances and brought one back. I should have. I had no trouble at all with my mango tree. I was asked what was in the box, and I told them it was just a plant and I carried it right on the plane. It could have been anything for all they knew!!

I also have become addicted to succulents and have bought a few cacti. Mike actually generously gave me one of his blooming cactus. I think it may have been one of them that bloomed when he was at work.

I saw your blog page...WOW! How impressive!! You have so much, I cannot imagine how much time it takes to care for all your trees. Good to hear from you. Funny, I found an old post on the GW forum and found your blog page. I wanted to email you and came across this post.

    Hi Mike,
You can go to Toni's member page and find the blog page right there. That was how I found it. Beautifull pictures. I am still waiting to hear about this most fragrant citrus tree. Shouldn't leave a guy hanging! LOL. Look forward to your email.

Andrew..It was..It was the one that bloomed while I was at work......lolol

Good to see you back here too! The more the merrier!

Ok..I will tell you what the citrus tree is, just as soon as I can find the name again..lol Four Winds told me that if they had known I mostly grow citrus for fragrance, they would of definatly suggested this one..They said, if one flower opens up, the whole backyard or your home smells like it! Even stronger than a lemon meyer..Yes..I find that hard to believe...lol

Thank you for helping me find Toni's pictures..I hope I have access to them here at work...I can't wait to see them..I told you she has amazing plants, and most uniquely beautiful!

Andrew, yes we are addicted to what? Jades? lol..The most colorful ones to boot..You should see the free one I got from the cactus and succulent show...The most color ever..
Do you think I should start a citrus members show around here too?

Between you with your back and poor Toni with her leg, and poor Buylady, I am feeling greatful I can lug my 50lb pots now..

Have a great day, and I will e-mail you just as soon as I can get free time at home..

    Morning...

Mike..I think Andrew explained how to view my website. Click on my name here on GW. See where it says, Birthday? Underneath is a www Yahoo/Flickr address..click on that. It'll take you to my page/s..but prepare to spend hours, no days..lol..I'm not sure how many pages there are. I wish I'd have known about Flickr years ago. It'd be nice going back, seeing plants when they were babies/young, and compare..think I joined Yahoo/Flickr in 2006.

Mike, I can't make promises..lol. Epi will flower when ready. One thing about NBOC, they grow tall. One leaf is over 4'. lol..In fact, I took cuttings numerous times, and still it's big. One thing, they don't need a ton of sun to bloom. Flowers grow 7+" long.

What did the mayor of the island do to prevent fragrant flowers? What happened?

ANDREW!!! How are you? It's been a long time. I remember when you had surgery, staples, then lugged that huge tree home. The things we do for our plants..lol.
BTW, how is your back now? Did surgery help?

When did you go to Fl? About the citrus grove, one problem is lack of rain, but Canker/Greens Disease has destroyed Fl's beautiful citrus. That's the reason citrus aren't allowed out of state. It's probably better you didn't bring a one home. Canker is very contageous. Your other citrus could catch this dreadful disease, and would need tossing. The government orderd several thousand acres of citrus burned to the ground. They sent out inspecters. If trees were healthy, owners were able to keep them, but those infected were burned..not one, the entire grove and/or nursery, despite size.
I can't imagine how much money was lost. I feel sorry for nursery-people who depend on selling trees for a living..that was their job, they're 9-5, now ruined..Terrible.
Leaf Miners mar foliage, too. Leaves curl and worms leave large, ugly trails over leaves. Disgusting!

Andrew, I'm shocked the airport didn't check the package. Incredible. When I flew to GA, they inspected everything. A friend bought a jar of makeup remover..they tossed it! Really makes one feel like flying. lol.

Thanks for the compliment..yes, it's a lot of work, but fun, too..if not, I'd probably have one 'fake' plant..lol. It's a great feeling when a plant flowers or fruits.

Oh succulents are fantastic, and there are so many different types..colors, shapes..I don't have many true cactus, too thorny..lol..but I collect Pachypodiums and E. Crown of Thorns, which have thorns..but they're so pretty I overlook those awful pinchy things. lol.

There's a good number of suc sellers on Ebay..and if you Google sux, you'll find many nurseries. One problem is many are out of US. I have a couple Adeniums 'Desert Roses' and several Aglaonemas 'Chinese Evergreens' from Thailand, but it's risky. I ordered from one nursery in Thailand..they're a new company, or new to shipping outside of their country..The owner didn't place the certificate on the outside of the box..I placed the order in May, 'last year.' It arrived December 23rd..lol..Thankfully, they reimbursed me for everything, inicluding shipping. But they have the most beautiful plants..ohhhhh..lol.
I also bought Clivia from China..they made the trip beautifully.

Mike, is it possible the name of the 'frangrant' plant is Murraya? It's citrus related, and soooo very fragrant. Blooms year round. There were times mine had hundreds of flowers...so many, you couldn't see its leaeves.

Mike, okay, I'll post a citrus pic..lol..Pic was taken in May or June, 2010. It needs water, so excuse the wilty leaves. This tree was given to me by a wonderful women I met here on GW. Turned out she lives in IL. Think she gave me this beauty in 2006..not sure, I'll have to check journal..Toni

    Hi Toni,
My back is STILL problematic but I am doing P/T to stengthen the core muscles which seems to be helping. I think it will just take some more time.

I went to Florida last July. Man, the heat was great but all that rain!! I don't know if I could handle that all the time. The citrus grove had cancer but also some other disease. The trees looked terrible and they were do to get torched(from what I was told.). So sad that they can just show up and burn them without warning. The confusing thing for me is my dwarf Improved Meyer came from Florida. I know it has a USDA inspection tag but it just makes you wonder.

I had no trouble what so ever with bringing that mango tree(on the plain none the less!) home. I bare rooted it, and then my friend helped me make a box for it. We got to the airport a little early and checked in and the guy just asked what was in the box. I just told him "It's a plant." He didn't mention the citrus ban or anything! For there being such strict regulations, you would have thought it would have been an issue but they didn't say anything! It kind of worried me to be honest. Our connection flight was in Newark NJ and I thought for sure that I would get asked or at least have security open the box but again,NOTHING!
To international airports and no troubles! SCARY!!

I was just chwecking out diffrent forums and checked out the cacti and succulent forum and when I saw the diffrent jades, I had to have them. Mike, Nanci, and Josh sent me some. Nanci actually sent me like 10 including some other really nice succulents. Now, I have over 20 jades. I just got a HUGE Hummel's Sunset from K and L cactus in California. If you check out there site you can contact them and ask for pictures of the jades, and cacti and actually propobly all her plants. She sells cuttings of jades also which is a big money saver if you don't want to spend big money.

I also got into adeniums this year. DO you have good luck with getting them to rebloom? I started with an 'Ice Pink' and then recieved two more in a trade. Where you able to end up trying to order any more from Thailand or did you give up? I saw some great colors and double flowers on Ebay but I wondered if I would ever get the plants and even if I did if they would survive the trip. I would like a couple more jades and that will have to be it for now.
What I really would like now is a 'Ruby Red' grapefruit tree or a Minneola tangelo. I love the minneola fruits. My latest addition is my 'Dancy' tangerine. I have lucked out with being able to get citrus trees from a greenhouse in Erie, PA which is only about 45 minutes away from me. Same place where I went and bought my Dwarf Improved Meyer lemon tree, although the quality of the latest shipment was terrible. I actually found a citrus disease on the first tree I bought. That was an Owari Satsuma that was around 2ft high and cost me $50.00! I could not believe the cost! Really expensive but I found this weird squggly pattern on the back of the leaf and found out that it was made by the larvae of some moth that lays eggs on the leaves and it will kill the tree. I tired everything to get rid of the crap but eventually it only had like 2 leaves on it and the nursery agreed to take it back. When I got there and told the nurseryman about it, he thought it was a nematode problem!! I was in shock. I thought well no wonder why these trees look like crap! They cannot even identify a pest or disease infestation. The nurseryman told me to go back and see if I could find another Owari which there was only one and it looked like it was on its last limb. I told them that I wanted a sweet orange and they offered me a 4ft tall 'Dancy' tangerine as an exchange. This tree had yellowing leaves which I corrected with an iron spray but the guy found like 7 trees with that disease and I don't know if he even threw them out. I was just shocked.
Well, nice hearing from you Toni, and I hope you check in here periodically now. We all can use your help.

Andrew, now you did it....You got Toni on a path of that she won't turn away from....lol

That Cand S place is a marvel! If I only had room for more, which I am sure Toni can always find, right Toni?lol

I love your post Andrew...I enjoy reading it..I will have to look into Flicker or you will have to show me how to use it..Thank you Andrew and Toni.

Toni, the reason why all the trees are gone is for condo's and houses..There is no land sacred there..;-((((

Andrew, you have some of the best choices in citrus I like..Now I will have to find out the name of the most fragrant one and tell you so you can get one of those too..Make room man....lolol

    Take care all of you!

    Howdy All,

Toni - Marang and jackfruits are in the same family but marang has a white flesh inside. Also, I've read that it tastes superior to its rival cousin. I bought some marang seeds recently, so no pics yet. As for the jackfruit; I will be receiving a seedling next week. I am very excited and can't wait for that one to arrive. I bought some ylang ylang seeds so nothing spectacular to look at right now...lol
I still can't believe you have well over 300 plants! Wow, you have quite the collection!!
I am located in Vancouver, WA. It rains a lot here but nothing like Puerto Rico... *sigh*

Andrew - I see you are on the hunt for yet another citrus tree; 'Ruby Red' grapefruit tree or a Minneola tangelo. LOL Our plant wants are never ending!

Mike - I did some research on the most fragrant citrus; I found this listed on four wind's website:

    Sour Oranges

Sour orange trees produce some of the most abundant, fragrant blossoms of all citrus species. They are more cold hardy than sweet oranges, and have been widely used in public and private gardens around the world for centuries.

    * Bouquet de Fleurs Sour Orange - An ornamental valued for its massive clusters of intensely fragrant blossoms, attractive dark orange fruit and shiny foliage. Can be used as a shrub or hedge, or in containers for an attractive and fragrant accent plant.Upright foliage with closely spaced rounded leaves is reminiscent of a bouquet.

    * Chinotto Sour Orange (Myrtle-Leaf) - Chinotto makes a small but highly decorative ornamental shrub. It is slow growing, with petite closely spaced leaves. It is great for bonsai or container growing. The small sour orange fruit grows in clusters. See photo.

    * Seville Sour Orange - Essential for authentic English marmalade. Also used fresh or dried as a key ingredient or garnish in Middle Eastern cooking.

    * Bergamot Sour Orange - An aromatic sour orange, prized for its pungent rind which provides the distinctive flavor of Earl Grey tea. Flowers in spring.

Now, I need one of these citrus trees too! LOL

    Have a great weekend everyone!

Buylady..Thank you. That's the thread!! Okay, in your pictures, number 4 and 5, you will see root stock growing on the bottom of the trunk, nearest the soil. The root stocks needs to be removed.. Sometimes it can be taken off with your fingers and thumb, but sharp scissors make a cleaner cut. Try cutting it closest to the trunk.
I admit, when I fertilize and SuperThrive, it can take 3-4 days..in winter, taking each plant to the sink/shower takes time, too. Since my plants are potted in soil, plus, I believe in letting soil dry between waterings, it really isn't that time consuming. In winter, all but succulents are misted once or twice a day..it sounds like a lot, but really isn't. lol...

Andrew..Yep, back problems seem ever-lasting..very painful. Do you feel PT helps? I tried it, after each session, my back would hurt more than before going in. lol. As for Chiropracters. Greedy, money-hungry wanna-be doctors..I went to one guy..He had me standing on my head..lol..left me there about 10 mins..thought I was going to faint. Never went back.

That's awful about your Satsuma..it sounds like Leaf Miner..Were the leaves curled? The lines sound like trails LM'ers make. I don't think there's a cure for this insect/worm.
At least they gave you another tree..50.00 is a lot..there's a nursery here that sell citrus, but prices are outragous. They have one citrus..600.00..lol..It's been there for years, probably will stay there forever..I remember when they sold 2' trees for 16.99. That's one reason I can't wait till Fl resolves their citrus issues..It's been at least 4 yrs since I bought a citrus tree..I found a couple young seedlings, but I dont expect much..both are tiny..

It surprises me they didnt check your package..I understand it requires work, 'they need to hire new ppl' but worth it..God, what if a terrorist said he had a plant, and it was a..........
That's scary..I don't like flying in the first place..cars are just fine, thank you..lol

BTW, how is your mango doing? Have a pic?

Did you mean the citrus grove have Canker or Cancer? Who knows, may be similar..it kills a tree, either on its own or man.
I know, it's sad the government has the power to destroy ones land, on the other hand, they're doing it for a reason. If all citrus acquired this dreadful disease, we wouldnt be drinking orange juice. Not to mention all the other meals and drinks made from citrus.

Perhaps, the June you went to Fl, was a fluke. I talk to ppl in Fl, and so many say they need rain. Jan and Feb are a bad time to go..everyone I know who went to Fl in Jan and/or Feb came back miserable..it rained the whole time..they were so disappointed..lol..everyone wants Fl sunshine during our dreary winter months..

Hammels is a beautiful Crassula..Gorgeous. I have a baby, or had..during our wind storm, a few sux flew away.. happened twice..once in June, the second time, last wk. I am so angry..finding emply pots w/o the plants..I think my doggie, Coco, is munching when he finds them on the ground.. And the squirrels!
I'll have to check that website..Did you say I have to write in order to make a purchase?

Most of the Adeniums from Thailand did well..a few died. The problem was, the seller sent them late in the year.. plants arrived in mid-winter..And as I mentioned, another Thailand seller placed the invoice inside the box..it's supposed to go on the outside..'dead' plants arrived in Dec..they were shipped a little over 2 months before they arrived.
If I see a plant I like and affordable, yes, I would order again, however, I haven't had luck w/Hoyas. But so far Adeniums and Aglaonemas are doing great..haven't lost one Aglaonema. Thailand has the most beautiful plants.
One thing I notice, a few Ebay sellers from Thailand think Americans are Bill Gates or Donald Trump. lol. When a plant, a young plant is over 100.00, forget it.

Getting Andeniums to rebloom..well, I think they prfer being underpotted. You should see two of my guys..the roots are bursting from their pots..lol..they really need to be repotted, but they tend to bloom more than those potted in standard pots..they also need direct sun. One May, my Adenium bloomed twice, west window. Blooms everywhere..it was 3 or 4 yrs old at the time..that's the number of years I had it, don't know its age when I bought it. Grafted Adeniums are supposed to bloom/rebloom more than ungrafted. Are your Adeniums grafted? Are you considering ordering from a particular nursery in Thailand?

Andrew, you'll find, most nursery clerks don't know a thing about plants..nothing..most don't know 'common names,' let alone botanical, and forget rare plants. lol.
Of course, their goal is to sell. When I worked at HD, my co-workers would talk people into buying 23" ceramic pots for a plant that was in a 10" pot..plus, we were told, if a customer wanted a plant potted, we were to set the plant higher, so it looked larger, when in fact, the pot was 8 sizes too big. Another thing they'd say is, 'this plant does great in any light.' oh God, that got me..but you know what? I was honest..shhh! lol. Another thing, I'd tell people not to buy leaf shine. lol

I do miss GW, but I've got to focus on hauling plants inside before it gets too cold..temps were in the 50's last night, and I'm not thrilled being out in the cold..each plant needs hosing, drying, and spraying.

It was great talking to you again, Andrew, take care.

Mike, ROFL...yep, Andrew led me down a 'new' path. hehe
Yep, we need more room for housing then trees..Pathetic!! Soon, there won't be any trees, and we'll all die from lack of oxygen. Man is destroying the earth.

Bo, is it good or bad that it doesnt rain there as much as it does in PR?? What about sun?
When are you going to sow seeds? Do you start in winter or spring?
If you have artificial lights, you can sow yr round..w/most plants, not all, and it depends what you're going to do with the plants once they're beyond seedlings..
Lucky you, z8..you can get away keeping plants out longer or, hauling them out sooner than z5 and 6.
I've never eaten Jack Fruit or its cousin..are they eaten like an orange or apple? As is?
Good luck sowing. If possible, can you take a pic of your seedling when it arrives?

Well, my post grew rather lenghthy, lol..too long? lol. Sorry. It's a cool, very dark, drizzly day..looked like night all day..the type of day you either want to sit back reading a good mystery, or visit GW and talk plants..I chose the latter..lol.
    Thanks for listening, Toni

Mike, now I must visit the nursery Andrew mentioned. lol.

This is new for me too Zecowsay....I got it from a friend that grows several of them every year and even gets fruit from them, tons..

All he does is set it in a bright cool room, preferably some sunlight, and keeps on the dry side..He says that by nature with the season, they drop their leaves and rest till the sun starts to get stronger again..I will get specifics, and come back and tell you more..He leaves his outside until a frost in going to happen, then brings them in...Let me see how much sunlight it needs, or what kind of light it will do great in while it rests..Thank you for the comments...It grew well all spring and summer, now the true challenge will be for me come winter...It is also bug resistant as he says..

Toni, I beat you to that nursery..olololol

Bo, thank you so much for that info...That is exactly the tree I was talking about and I am getting one come spring...I can't wait now...:-)
Love seeing you post here by the way. How are your plants doing?

Cath, I guess that answers your question...Are you going to get one...? If so, I think that only 4winds carries them...If you do, I specifically ask them to hold one of the best for you...They know me pretty well..:-)

I went to the site posted above, but I couldn't do anything. lol. How depressing is that???

Thanks for the pics though..My God, those succulents are adorable!!! The variegation..Where do I find this site or do you order from a catalog?

Well, i had an errand to run, but been hauling in plants since noon..and only brought in 20 or so..doesn't even make a dent.
It's so chilly and supposed to drop in the 40's..I worry that plants will rot between lots of rain and cold. Sigh.

    Mike,
I already have a Bouquet de Fleurs, (got it last year) if that was your question. If the question was regarding the Cocktail, I have been thinking about it but don't dare...yet. I am getting mixed up between the threads. Husband had back surgery Monday and I have to figure how to get the half whiskey barrels with the figs in them into the garage. Probably will call a son who lives an hour away. It is getting to be "that" time.
As to fig growing; the larger sizes do very well in attached garages - no sunlight needed as they are deciduous. Do look up the fig forum. Great information there. The trees have been producing many more figs since I started reading it. The downside is I have also bought more fig trees ($$$), upside is I have rooted some and given some away - spread the joy.

    Hi Toni,
IF you want to get any info on Lorraine's plants, go to K and L cactus website. Once there, find where you can email the company. This is how I did it. Lorraine wilol recieve your emails and just ask her for pics of what you want to see. That should help you, if not, email me, and I will give her your email adress. This is what I did for Mike and Bo.
    Mike,
Now that I know that your talking about this sour orange, I can breathe easier! I grow the fruit trees for both fruit and flower, and since the oranges are sour, I wreally don't want one. Thank god!!!

Cath, I once read an artical about Bouquet de Fleurs being one of the top five fragrant citrus. Does BDF have small or average size leaves?
I wish your husband well. Back surgery is very painful.
Have you considered purchasing a dolly? A couple/few strong men doing all the work is preferable, lol, but a dolly makes it easier than carrying from A to B. I bought one at HD 2 or 3 yrs ago, when a few plants got too heavy.
Dolly's start at 19.99 and up. I bought the 20.00 type, which is pretty generic, but works..the bottom has too short a piece, the part that holds a plant, when moving around. Sorry, don't know what it's called. When using a dolly w/a shorter bottom, a heavy plant Rock & Rolls, sometimes even flipping over, so a longer/wider bottom is probably stable and better made.

Andrew, your letter to Mike is funny..Thank God..Another plant!!! LOL
Andrew, today I worked outside, hosing, rehosing in sink, and spraying plants, from 11:30-6:30. I dislike short days! It got too dark to work, so gave up, but there's 5 plants in the sink, some on the floor and back stairs. Thankfully, they're small, 4-6" pots.
Temps are dropping super quick. Last night it was 44F degrees. Tonight, supposed to be the same. Some succulents look a little frost-bitten; I grabbed them up fast, but there's probably more..

I'm very frustrated. Think it was this thread I mentioned we had very strong winds, twice. Well, somehow, some of my sux got away. I found empty pots and labels, but no plants. One was my Variegated Portulacaria Afra. It was just starting to look like a bonsai/tree. Others were sux w/o ID, all variegated.
Anyway, after quitting tonight, I looked at the shelf that sux are overwintered, and guess what? It's 3/4 full! And I still have, 50+ sux outside that need a space to live this winter. I don't know where they will go. I received a Bowiea today, won a suc on Ebay, and now thinking about looking at Lorraine's plants, too?!?
I have to hold off, at least until I finish bringing plants inside, find homes w/light for each.
Mike sent some pics from K and L. Her sux are gorgeous. Especially variegated. As much as I like them, I have to be logical, 'for a while anyway,' lol.

Does Lorraine stop shipping in winter or a certain time yr?
It's too bad K&L site doesn't list names and pics of all plants available..it's much easier than trying to decide which plant/s, one wants.
Besides, that's how many plants are discovered: Browsing. I can't tell you the number of times I bought plants browsing a site or Ebay sellers Items for Sale.

We'll see how it goes..Thanks Andrew..BTW, did you get any sux from Lorraine? If so, which, and do you have pics? Take care, Toni

Toni - It's nice and sunny here probably 4 out of 12 months. This is why I keep threatening to move to CA..lol The "Winters are normally mild, and very moist, with January averaging 39.9 F (4.4 C). Lows, though usually above freezing, can reach that mark or below 37 nights per year, however.[36] Cold snaps are short-lived, and snowfall occurs no more than a few times per year, although the city has been known to see major snow and ice storms thanks to cold air outflow from the Columbia River Gorge."

If I could grow marang, pulasan, jackfruit and other tropicals then yes, if it rained here like Puerto Rico, then that would definitely be a plus!

I've been meaning to get artificial lights but I keep spending all my money on more plants!

Also, I am thinking I can keep my plants out until early November, then I'll have to start migrating them indoors.
Jakfruit and marang are nothing like the apple or orange. They have a thick outer shell that has to be sliced open but IMHO it's well worth it. I'll definitely take pics of my seedlings; should they agree to cooperate.

Mike - My plants have done better than I expected; especially since this is my first year! So, yep, I am decidedly thrilled and happy with the results. Though, I do wished more of my plumeria cuttings would've rooted but I did learn a lot of things along the way.

    Happy Gardening Everyone!

    Hi Toni,
I ordered a nice big hummel's Sunset jade from K and L and it is sure a beauty! Almost 15 inches tall and over a foot wide, you can see a pic of it on the C and S forum. I just placed another order with Lorraine last night. I will post pictures of them when they get here which provided they go out today as planned, they should be here by Thursday or Friday at the very latest.

Lorraine is a one women show. I think she told me that she has to take care of 12 acres plus her two big greenhouses. She does all this on her own andshe was telling me yesterday or the day before that it can take her 4 hours just to spray her plants for bugs and fertilizing takes even longer. I feel bad for her but she must love it.

I know what you mean about not being able to browse pictures on her site but I personally, I am VERY happy that she doesn't have pics of all her plants, or I would go broke!! Two of the plants that I bought from her are rare according to her and I think even the last one is rare. She also told me that the size of them makes them valuable since it takes so long for them to grow large enough to bloom. I can't wait to show them off, jus like Mike does!

    Hi Cath,
I think I met you on the fig forum? I am looking to grow a few figs myself. I actually had someone locally offer me cuttings but darn it, I erased the email with there contact info so that went out the window!

    Toni,
Thank you for your concern. We have a dolly which works very well. Good suggestion! We use it with a rope attached to it and slung around the pot so that the pot doesn't slip. We have become very efficient with it. I probably could move the citrus. My greatest difficulty would be preventing my DH from helping, that and moving the half whiskey barrels. So rather than risk getting help at the expense of doctor bills, I'll call our son.
The Bouquet de Fleurs' leaves are usual size but distinctive. The veins are indented and this gives the leaf a puffy look without puckering. Think of a large lettuce leaf basil with more substance. It was more pronounced and had the leaf edges rolling down when I received it from Four Winds. So i think it must be normal for this cultivar and not due to insect damage. I moved this plant up very quickly into larger pots (read too quickly). Usually they go from foam cups to plastic gallon to 12" clay to 16" clay to 22-24" clay. This works well for me as long as I leave them in the pots until they are ready, and having mostly only a few sizes simplifies the pot storage mess. However this time I only gave them a year at each size. The gallon to 12" worked well (They are now in 16" pots.) But now they are rebelling (or just growing roots). They flushed this Spring and that has been it. No more growth, no blossoms and certainly no fruit. We'll see what the winter brings. If I have to I can repot them into 12" this Winter. Sigh.

Bo. Even though you're climate isn't like Fl's, it sounds wonderful.
Here in Il, it's cold from Nov until May..the last two years, it was prety chilly in June!!! Our summer was very hot, 1.5 months of 98-100F, 85F nights, 90+% humidity. I pray we don't have as cold a winter as we did a hot summer.

Yes, money goes fast when it's spent on plants. lol. Shipping and handling really increases the total. I can't believe how high it is, although IMO, many places charage large amounts for handling.
Buying ordinary Shop Lights will save you a bundle. I can't believe the cost they want for plant lights, w/o the bulbs. Some fixtures are only 2' long! lol..
Both my fixture are 6' and under 30.00. The first was 19.99..Best time to buy is when they're on sale. And printing online coupons are great. 15-20% off a purchase makes a big difference.
One last thing..do what most of America does..Credit Cards. lol.

Andrew, I saw a pic of the Sunset..it's beautiful. Bet you can't wait until it comes in. Did you Google the other two sux you ordered?
It's true, many larger succulents are priced high because of their growing times. Some succulents take years to grew a few inches. You should ask her if they're slow-growing, slower than most other sux. This way you'll know not to over-fertilize. You'll have to snap pics when they arrive.
Yeah, I know..when plants have pictures, and we see something we deem too good to pass, it's added to our carts. lol. It'd sure help a seller. There's always narrowing down. I usually add a huge amount of plants to my cart, then, go over the invoice, review pics, again and again, until enough are deleted and the price managable. One thing, there are three Hoyas I want..sigh..lol

Cath, how long has it been since your husband had back surgery, 'if you don't mind me asking?' Depending on the type makes a big differece in healing time. Age and a few other factors matter too. Back surgery is horrible. I had it once and don't plan on a second.
So, yeah, keep him away from your plants..If you have a strong son, 'maybe he has friends who wouldn't mind helping out,' you get the whole job done in a few hours. Do you bring your citrus and fig trees inside the house???

Yep, that's one reason I'm into repotting 1-2 sizes up instead of several sizes. Sometimes they just stop growing. It's worse w/some tropicals and forget succulents. Location/climate makes a differece, but when plants are grown indoors, despite ones residence, they will protest and stop. But what works for one might not work for another. Usually after roots start filling pots, growth resumes. Guess it depends on the plant, size of pot and time of year.

Reading your post made me tired. lol. Potting, unpotting, repotting! Sigh, is right. lol.

Thanks for the Fleurs' description. I had one long ago, but it's in citrus heaven. I think it's gone. lol. One day I'll have to read tags and see if it's among the living.
Good luck getting things in order. Don't push too hard. Doing what I'm telling you not to ruined my back and knee, so be careful. There's always tomorrow. Toni

Mike..I wasn't going to mention it, but you know that Aloe you have that I like? Although I didn't know its name, I looked around, found one or one similar, on Ebay. It just got here..lol..It's nowhere as large as yours, so it doesn't have the trunk.
Doubt I'll ever find the one you have, sigh. lol..
Can't wait to see your new plants. Hurray. Wait until you see my orange flower, Gardenia tree!!! lol. Toni

Mike, the Ebay's seller name is MDA515. I looked at his site, but he doesn't have another orange flower Gardenia on the list. You could 'try' emailing him..he adds new plants on Monday, but if you're really interested, check his site daily. Toni

    Toni,
This was DH's second back surgery in 2 years but he was running 5Ks in between. Both surgeries were for herniated and arthritic discs in the lumbar region. This time less extensive than last.

The figs go in the attached unheated garage unless very small. What a great location! It leaves more room in the house for other plants and I water about once a month if that. The citrus go in the walk out basement. I have two sets of double windows - could still use more light and space. Couldn't we all?

I looked closely at the Bouquet de Fleurs yesterday just to check and the leaves do look a little like lettuce leaf basil but not quite as pronounced.

If one of you wants to start a cutting of the orange gardenia for the other, I have had good luck starting gardenias in distilled water with a plastic bag over the top and changing the glass, water and bag once a week. Never a 100% take on these so take a few cuttings to be sure you get one. The roots are in shadow and the tops are in light. I place them on the kitchen counter under a West window. The end of June is a better time to take them but I started some early this month and already have some striking roots. One was transferred to soil a week or so ago. Hope this helps.

    Mike,
Can't remember about the tree in the porch. Could you be thinking of Jack Lord?

Cath, your poor husband. Is he in a lot of pain? In 1994, they found a slow-growing tumor in my lower spine. They did immediate surgery. After waking, I vowed never to have back surgery again..I couldn't move 1/4"..that's the reason I said it was painful. To top that off, I now have 8 slipped discs, 4 herniated, and a bunch of other 4 and up syllable names..Arachnoditis, osteo arthritis, etc. I sympathize with your husband. Is he able to walk?

Do you let your Figs go dormant in the garage? Does it have windows? Do you cover soil, add Christmas lights on soil? How do they thrive w/o freezing? Others mentioned keeping plant in their garage, I don't have the nerve..lol.
Some people do this with citrus, too. God, if I could put plants in the garage, I could buy a lot more..lol..

What exactly is a walk-out basement? Is it in or outdoors?
Or like an enclosed porch with two windows?
Yes, we do 'all' need more room. lol.

Your FDF sounds lovely. Do you have a picture..Maybe it wasn't a FDF I had..I certainly don't recall lettuce leaf basil leaves..hmm.

Cath, I only got Gardenias to root twice..gave the babies away, then never got them to root again. lol.
Actually, as much as I love 'denias, I don't have room for duplicate plants..But, since I've never had this type of Gardenia before, I might try cuttings, in case. The truth is, I don't know anything about this species. Never even heard of it before..And sure don't know if it's related to standard Gardenias. I Googled but didn't find any information. Thanks Cath.

Mike, here are pics of the new-comer..lol

DH is doing OK, walking, having some pain and numbness. If your surgery was done long ago, you may want to consider it if the doctors suggest it. They have made great advances, DH's surgery was by laser. His doctor has a great reputation and is teaching others. E-mail me if you want more information (jbatka@fuse.net)

Figs can take about mid 20s degree temperature. Over the years I have found that deciduous Z7 plants survive in my garage away from the single small window. The evergreens are given the light. Plants get no covering and no lights. Sometimes the top of the pots are frozen a little but I use big pots, minimum 16" on the floor. The smaller pots sit on top of the big pots. I think that the soil mass of the large pot helps the smaller pot. The small, about 3 gal Violette de Bordeaux from Raintree had some die back, but I think that was from taking it outside early. Herman, resident expert on the Fig Forum, says that this is not a true Violette de Bordeaux and is more cold sensitive. Figs vary as to cold sensitivity. Mostly I try to get Z7s.

Regarding the gardenia: I think the orange gardenia is a true gardenia. Haven't researched it though. I have found that acid loving plants root in distilled water which is supposed to be acidic - our water is quite alkaline.

    Hope this helps

Cath, numbness is normal when back surgery is performed. Is his leg numb? That's where my numbness focused after back surgery..
The problem with me getting back surgery. First, we have HMO. If you have HMO, you'll understand. lol. Second, I had knee surgery about 3 wks ago. Yep, my knee is a goner, too. The MRI showed 8 problems going on. It's difficult getting one surgery as an HMO member, let alone a second.
    3. Because of my knee problem, the doc did basic surgery. If, within the next 6 months, it swells again, or I have too much pain, they say I'll need an artificial knee, something I don't want. I don't have help here, so it'd be difficult getting along.

Okay, plant talk..:) Maybe you'd know. I tried growing figs, supposedly hardy to z5, twice..they both died. Both Figs were young. Do you think there's such a thing as a z5 hardy fig? If so, what can I do to get it to live here?
The only figs I have now are Ficus/tropicals, definately, not hardy to IL. There's always next year. Sunlight isn't a problem, nor is amending soil. Any advice?
Wish I could recall the types of fig that's supposed to be hardy. There is one called Chicago Fig, but I think that one is z6.

When I have time, I'll research the gardenia. It's planted in acidic soil, the same as my other Gardenias..Thanks so much. And hope your husband feels better..Toni

    Toni,
DH's numbness is in his leg.

The figs are Ficus carica. If planted outside here or farther North they need extensive protection. Your best bet is to read the Fig Forum if you plan to do this as I have no experience. I have read that Chicago Hardy grew in Chicago, had been protected many years, went one Winter without protection, died to the ground, sprouted from the roots and bore fruit that Summer. Key points: the fig was several years old (and so had an extensive root system) and it fruited on new wood. Apparently this fruiting habit is quite unusual for figs and it is this that makes Chicago Hardy a candidate for growing in Z5.

    Cath, I didn't know you replied..Sorry.

I think anytime a person has back surgery, it effects the leg..Another problem..depending which side a disc slips bothers that leg..
So, say your dh's disc slipped on the left side, most likely, his left leg will bother him..and visa versa.

I had Ficus carica, but don't remember if that's the type I planted outdoors. It sounds familar..the nursery claimed it was hardy to z5...it didn't survive. BTW, the Ficus/Fig was at least 3' tall.
Then someone said Chicago Figs are hardy to z6 and up. I don't know what to think or do...Maybe next spring? Thanks for your help...Toni

    Toni,

I have a Chicago Hardy fig, a clone from a fig that grew in Chicago, Z5, and survived without protection and produced figs the following season. However it had been grown for several years with protection and so had an extensive root system to draw on. As we know older plants can survive cold that younger plants cannot. My fig has spent 2 years with me come Spring and is in about a 16" pot. I plan to put it in a half whiskey barrel, that I already have, next Spring in order to build up a strong root system. The year (or two) after that I plan to plant it out in the garden either without protection or with minimal protection. I plan to take cuttings because the few figs I had this year were delicious - the fig is a keeper - and I want insurance. I have never done this before and so cannot advise you to do it but I definitely would not plant a fig fresh from the nursery in the ground in Z5 and expect it to survive winter as a two year old. If you want expert information, read the fig forum and especially the posts by Herman who is trialling figs for cold hardiness and flavor in New Jersey Z6b which is not Z5 but the information is still valuable.
