oranges are usually grafted b/c their natural roots are weak and more susceptible to disease, fungus, rot, etc.

i think meyers are grafted mainly for getting dwarf sized trees. usually grafting a mature scion onto rootstock will produce fruit faster than from a seedling.

First you have a seedling which is a Meyer root which is undependable and not very resistant. If it is a container plant, it doesn't make so much difference. Grafting or T-budding a mature Improved Meyer Lemon onto your 2 year old seedling should give you fruit in a year. If you want a dwarf tree, as in container growing, you won't get it with Meyer seedling root; and if it is in the ground, you have the weak root issue. So, you are sorta in a lose-lose situation, unless you are just playing/learning and then I say, have fun. The answer to your question is "yes" grafting or budding a mature piece onto your two year old root will produce fruit faster. I have 8,000 Meyers, all in ground; but mine are on Macrophylla rootstock which is very strong and produces fruit in about 15 months.

The seedling and the mother plant are both in pots. However, the seedling is only a year old, so I guess I'll wait until next year.

How do you root a lemon cutting? Maybe I'll try that!
