I actually plant both ways. Usually 3-4 seeds of any given cross will germinate at the same time. These seeds are removed immediately and planted in a beer cup. I plant them rootlet sideways and fairly shallow (ie. I can just barely see the shell of the seed when I look at the soil but rootlet is covered). After this initial germination I will let the next seeds that germinate develop an inch of growth before planting them in the same cup. The only reason I do this is because I'm planting 5-7 seeds in each cup. If I add a seedling that already has some green growth and an inch or more of root to a cup with larger seedlings it seems to be able to get off to a better start than if I plant it with just the rootlet showing.
If I were planting only 1 seed to a cup I would plant all my seeds right after the rootlet appears.

The only problem you may run into when using this shallow planting is that you may have to add additional potting soil around the base of some seedlings after they get to be 3-4 inches tall to prevent them from leaning over.

Hope this helps.

Linda:
Thanks.
Yesterday I did take some of the seeds I had been trying to germinate in peroxide but they hadn't done a thing and moved them to the "on the rocks" method just to see what would happen.
This morning I checked the cups and yes, one of the seeds germinated. BUT, the question is whether it was ready to do this with the soaking method anyway.

I'll have to wait till I have another empty cup and do a test with some straight from the refrig to see how long it will take without any peroxide soaking.

What is the "On the rocks" method. I see quite a few using it. Is it better than the soaking method?

This is the first year I am going to attempt to grow daylilies from seed.

I need all the help I can get!

Here is a link to the site which has the info. It just recently got moved to this location.

The jury is still out for me on this method. I'm keeping an open mind but so far I'm not seeing any advantage.
