We invested in several Deer Busters, battery operated motion detectors that emit a high-pitch sound--not cheap, and they don't work at all except to give me a headache when working in the garden, and make passing dogs bark. In fact, I have tried many things, and nothing works except the air horn (which hurts my ears too). And unfortunately, I can't shoot them in my neighborhood.

We use Irish spring bar soap to keep the deer from munching on tree bark. Drill a hole in it and tie it with some nylon string to a low branch. We still see them, but they quit chewing our young trees. I've even cut a few bars in 6ths and tossed the chunks in the flower beds.
