Meyer Pruning

I did alot of cutting on my Meyer the other day, including a couple of branches with leaves and fruit. I had too many leaveless branches so I pruned it to the shape that I wanted. I'm happy with the new look of the tree (open center).I have the tree next to a window and under 250W lighting right now. I'm hoping for more leaves. What do you predict will happen to my tree? Will it flower under lights throughout the winter or will it only flower in the spring again? The 3 remaining lemons have been changing from green to yellow. Do Meyers actually turn orange? I'm hoping the lights will fully ripen them. All feedback is appreciated :)

Hi Good..Did you prune all parts of the tree or just those stray branches?
I predict, the branches you haven't cut will continue to flower and fruit..Meyer's bloom and fruit yr round. If you've pruned every branch then disregard everything I've said..LOL.
I had a Meyer's 13 yrs and when fruit matured they were yellow. It's not to say some types, maybe depending on stock will turn fruit orange. If I had a scanner I'd post the pic the last yr I had my Meyers..22 fruit.
BTW, is your Meyer's getting any natural sunlight? Toni

    Hi Toni

Yes, it sits on a west facing window that brings in decent light. I keep the curtain open all day and just recently, I started giving it artificial light during the day for about 8 hrs to go along with the light from the window.

Wow 22 fruit. How tall was the tree? What size container? This year I'm trying to give it more chill hours for more flowers and hopefully more fruit next season :)

I removed alot of branches that were in the center. Most didn't have leaves. The ones that were cut that had leaves and fruit were facing towards the center as well. Now it has a certain look. I want more leaves. It had too many branches. If you'd like to see it, I can take a pic and email it to you. Thanks for always being there and helping us out.

Im pretty sure you just decreased chances of getting fruit. From what ive read on here, pruning will cut down ( on the shortened branches) on flowers. itll recover. good luck!

GG, sure send me pics of your tree..I enjoy looking at others' photos.

My Meyers was in a 17" pot..That was my baby, my favorite tree. I never should have set in the gh that yr. What a mistake!

    Send the pics..Toni

Paul, pruning will decrease fruit yield under most circumstances. But the tree must be shapely, first and foremost. Try to avoid pruning, unless the tree is getting out of hand, or unless you are trimming dead wood.

Good..you can prune your tree to the desired shape. My Meyer I prune every year as well as my Bearess Lime and my Lisbon Lemon.I still get baskets of fruit off of every tree.I counted 77 Limes this year, started picking them weeks ago,and my Meyer I picked 24 lemons off of this tree yesterday for a Christmas gift to a neighbor, and still have 30 lemons on it to pick. They flower year around in flushes of blooms. My feeling on pruning is that it strenghtens the branches and doesn't seem to slow the blosom production down at all with mine.If you keep the fruit on the branch past the picking and ripeness point it might turn alittle orange, just pick and enjoy. Make sure you feed your Meyer tree with a Citrus food they are heavy feeders.I feed mine (4) times a yearI dig a trench down around the drip line 2 to 3 inches cover back over with soil and water deeply. These trees recover fast and repair themselves in no time at all if fed properly and watered.Only to flush blooms again for their glorious fruit. When I prune I prune dead wood and branch ends about 6 inches long, and sometimes they fruit again months later on the same branch that was pruned. So happy pruning...***Suzanne

Suzanne, Nice harvest :) Your tree is in the ground correct? I forgot to mention that mine is in a container. I wish I could get that many lemons from an indoor tree :)

NO...all my citrus tree's are dwarf and all are in my big greenhouse.I literally feed the neighborhood with them. It's incredible just how many I get. My Bearess Lime gets so loaded I have to put braces up to hold the limbs.Same with the Meyer. So this time of year all the neighbors get a basket of lemons & limes and a Christmas card :)***Suzanne
