rainbarrel, again

My Father has given me a very nice WOODEN barrel that I want to use as a rain barrel. The narrowest width is 17 inches and it is 16 inches high.

Do you think I need to line it? I have a very small plastic bucket inside right now, that I thought would be big enough....but one rain filled it, and the barrel.

My question is

Do you think need to line it with plastic? If so and suggestions? All the garbage cans I have seen are either way to small, or too wide. Do you think I need to treat the barrel with something?

Do you think I should prop the barrel up on some bricks.

If you want to seal the inside you could use bees wax which is safe and is used by barrel makers, and it won't change the look any. The barrel needs to soak-up a little water to swell the wood so it stays water tight.
One natural thing that works just right for another. How cool is that?
