Hi, I am a parent volunteer who is helping revitalize the landscape at a public elementary school in Berkeley, CA, sunset 17, zone 9.

Currently the school is ringed by a chain link fence with a narrow planting strip filled with agapanthus. There is plenty of sun but it is lightly filitered by some medium size sycamore trees to the north and west. There is no irrigation.

I am currently considering planting some of the following:

1) tagetes lemonii

2) salvia leucantha or salvia 'waverly' or salvia greggii

3) tibouchina urvilliana-princess flower

I need plants that are not poisonous or irritating to the skin; that are summer drought tolerant; that bloom, fruit, color or otherwise do something during the school year as opposed to the summer; and that can grow in a 2-foot planting strip.

Any suggestions?
