I'll join too! If I'm not mistaken, a round robin is when one person send a packet or two of seeds to another person. The next person replaces as many packets as they take out, and then sends the envelope off to the next person. The last person will send the envelope back to the first person. So...

Person one sends five packets out
Person two takes two packets and puts two of his/her own packets in and send to person three
Person three does the same....(repeat for as man people)
Last person sends the envelope back to the first person

Since ladybug is hosting it, we'll have to wait for her to post the rules. There are some RR where you are not allowed to put in any extra packets and there are some where you can put as much as you like in

Boy these group swaps and round robins really make the harsh winter days go by faster!

A word of caution on round robins-- they work so long as no one goes AWOL. That means, no one goes on vacation, no one gets sick and lands in the hospital for a week, no one gets trapped by a freak storm so they can't get to the post office, no one "misplaces" the envelope. You see what I mean.

Sometimes robins get stuck somewhere or simply go missing, and the ones on the bottom part of the list don't get their seeds until quite late. I'd suggest that you keep the list short (like ten people) and order the list geographically-- so the package doesn't have to traipse back and forth across the country.

Just a heads up to whoever organizes this (Kenny?) to make sure everyone understands the rules, is aware of the possible pitfalls, and commits to making it work.

Kenny are you sure? Bev is right. Lets make it only 10 people, named varieties, something special or new. I have many special seed, too many. I leave it up to you. What to you think?

I agree with LadyBug-- if it's a RR with special or named varieties, I would participate.

It's a little disappointing when you contribute (and are looking for) interesting or unusual varieties and your choices end up being the same-old stuff. Plants so ubiquitous that anyone who is into gardening enough to do a RR would already have them, or not want them.

What exactly would be considered interesting or unusual varieties?

I have not been gardening as long so some of you but I do have some seed that I would like to share. I just do not know what would qualify my seeds to be special or unique. Does it have to be hard to get, a certain colour, a new variety of something or what exactly?

To me something special would be, for example, I bought a velvet Amaranthus (dark maroon). It,s new this year instead of Love lies bleeding. Or the red castor bean, instead of the green. A new variety would be good. Something varigated, instead of plain green. I bough many seeds this year, but I can not possible use them all, so 1/2 I could give away. If there are only 10 seeds, the package would have only 5 and so on.
If nobody wants to do the R.R. I,ll list my plants on the trade list. Lets have some fun. It,s so cold, all I want to think is flowers.......
Maybe next year we can save some special seeds and try again.

Bev, I totally agree, I think it's beter if we divide everyone who wantes to join into groups of ten instead of one big one, it can get quite confusing when an envelope goes missing.

And the point of named varieties is right, I know during the previous swap, there were a few people who sent in heirloom tomatoes, and other named varieties, and I really couldn't find other heirloom varieties to send back, which in all aspects, I apologize. So, yes, I think a named variety rr is good

Everything understood. Thank you for clarifying. I would still be interested in joining in. Let's see what we can get going. Think of the beautiful warm weather and beautiful blooms ahead, just like ladybug said...it helps get thru this awful cold spell we're having.

Ladybug has expressed what she considers "special", and I agree. For a seed to be 'special" it would need to meet one or more of the following criteria:
- a "new release"
- a fairly recent Fleuroselect winner
- something not available available from the "big" seedrack merchants like OSC, and the Hardware store brands. Perhaps only available through specialty seed houses
- a named variety of commercial seed or, if home-collected, seed from a named variety that usually comes true from seed.
- plants that are rare or endangered in the wild, such as goldenseal and other medicinal plants

Here's an example. Cosmos is pretty ordinary garden annual. I wouldn't want something labelled simply "Cosmos" or even "Cosmos--pink" that was home collected. I already have it, from a self-seeded patch that was originally "Sensation Mix". The dominant colour is now pale pink, and they are now all rather uniform in height and bloom time. Now if someone had some "Cosmos- Seashells" or "Cosmos -Chocolate" from a commercial packet, I might want some.

What falls into the "boring and ubiquitous" category is a matter of personal taste. Some people have huge swaths of land and they just can't get enough blackeyed susans and coneflowers for the meadow-in-progress. Some people love poppies, lupins, mallows, and other things that put out a gazillion seeds and often don't come true to variety. I guess the litmus test is whether the plant is widely grown, whether all your neighbours have it, and whether it self-seeds like crazy--meaning you never really run out of seed.

I am glad you all agree. It looks like we might get it going.....?
