Specials / Named Varieties Round Robin

Hi all,

Let's see if we can get this started-- there seemed to be enough interest on Ladybug's earlier thread. So here goes . . .

1. Robin limited to ten participants.

2. Seeds only (no gifts/crafts/doo-dads) to keep the package weight down

3. Named varieties and "special" seeds only. Commercial extras okay. Garden /home collected okay only if you know the variety and know that that it will likely come true from seed. "Special" can be an unusual colour, a new release, a Fleuroselect winner, a hard-to-find variety.

4. Seed packets should be labelled with botanical (latin) name and variety.

5. Please use sturdy packets so we don't have messy mishaps.

6. Take no more than you give. You can take as many packets as you like so long as you replace the same number.

7. Replacements should not duplicate varieties that are already in the package. For example, if you there is already some Hibiscus moscheutos 'Disco Belle White' in the package, don't use the same variety as a replacement for what you take. You could, however, use a different variety Hibiscus, such as "Lord Baltimore Red".

8, Diversity is good. Replacements should not include more than two of the same variety. See (9)

9. You may give more than you take. These "extras" can be duplicates. Keep in mind that if everyone gives extras, the padded envelope is soon overwhelmed and someone eventually will need to replace it with a larger one, meaning the mailing cost goes up.

  1. Participants should forward the package within two days of receiving it. If you have vacation plans between mid-February and mid-March, please don't participate. It is not fair to others further down the list to bear the inconvenience of vacation delays. Keep in mind that indoor sowing season is fast approaching, and delays can sometimes mean that a planting date is missed.
  2. Use whatever delivery service or courier you like. You may want to choose Canada Post's "express post" service because it has delivery confirmation.
  3. Please post "received and sent" updates on this thread, so we can track the progress of the Robin.

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me off the board at bevw(at)idirect.com .

So, from the previous thread, I think we have seven or eight so far. To confirm your participation, please e-mail me with your full name and mailing address so I can keep track of how many we have.

    Hi all,

    {{gwi:676792}}
I didn't get the package mailed until Tuesday and I entrusted it to the DH who probably got it to the post office after pickup time, so Wednesday is more likely. Karin, if you haven't already received it, you should get it today.

Has anyone received this yet ?

    the robin has arrived to-day.....friday.
I went through the seeds, great stuff. Some I had to look up, never heard of them before. Thanks Bev.
I replaced the seeds I took with mine, 2 hour later they were at the postoffice in town, because I know everybody is waiting for them. They came and went all in 1 day. Hopefully the package makes it in good time back to you Bev.

Wow! What amazing turnaround. I don't know why the package took so long. I was about to submit the DH to a thorough cross-examination:

So, Mr. ___ --if that is your real name--please tell the court exactly when you took your wife's round robin package to the post office. ARE YOU SURE? Can anyone verify that you were at the post at the time and date you claim to have been there . Were there any witnesses? Why should we believe you-- a non-gardener? Isn't it true that you begrudge every penny your wife spends on seeds? Isn't it true that you HATE gardening? That you CAN'T STAND the starting mix on the sunroom floor? That you secretly hope that all the seedlings DIE? Isn't it? ISN'T IT?

Oh, never mind dear, the package arrived.

    Bev :-)

    Hey Bev,

You married to the same guy as me ? LOL !

Glad to hear that the package arrived somewhere. Last year or the year before , on a round robin I was in ......package got lost somewhere ( I believe it was last year)and another package had to be sent out to replace it . So I am very glad to hear that the package has been sighted and is flying again .

Received the birdie today! Will remail tomorrow as we're getting socked by snow, and besides..I have to look up what a lot of these things are ..(Bev's natives, more than likely). It will be on it's way again tomorrow. I'm going to take it to a postal outlet, to make sure postage is ok.

    Wendy

hi , getting ready for the package ( can you tell I am anxious?) LOL . By the way ....can anyone tell me ..... where is North Augusta? Only one I can track down is in North Carolina.

    Hi again,

Just tried to do a search for "Threegardeners" the LeeAnne lady I am supposed to mail the package to . In a member search, it says there is no one called "Threegardeners" that is a member of Gardenweb? I know I have never traded with Threegardeners myself so I was looking to see if there was something she might be interested in , in particular . Now I have no clue who she is , or where she is . ????????

hehe, maybe it's time I stopped being so shy :))
    bev..lookie what I did!!
Hello everybody, nice to meet all of you.
Signet, I am just a tad south west-ish of Ottawa, if you look it up on Google earth you can pretty much look down my chimney. Maybe 100 people.
I am sooo looking foreward to the robin...I saw one in the yard a couple days ago, but I guess it wasn't ours!! Maybe it's spring.

    Hello,

It looks like I have a while more to wait...I thought I was next on the list that Bev posted, guess not. Is there a list in the envelope that tells you who to mail it to next? Can't wait for the robin to land here.
    TTFN (ta ta for now)
    PR

Trish..you ARE next! I mailed it away today. P.S. To everyone involved..I had to upgrade the envelope to a bigger size (already), and spread everything out so there wasn't a "lump" and wouldn't fit the template for envelope as opposed to parcel post. I spread all the seeds out on a peice of thin cardboard evenly, then covered it with "press and seal" food wrap. The packets look like they'll stay put.
Also, if we could be economical with the seed packaging, I think that would help. I didn't do it on my round, but maybe we can cut down the whole commercial packs, leaving the pertinent info on whatever half we save.
I pinholed some of my little ziploks as well so they were flatter..no air. One of those vacuum pack sealers would come in handy!
Anyhoo Trish-don't forget the white envelope with labels and the list is in there too..have fun everyone!

    Wendy

that is a great idea about the press and seal food wrap Wendy. It,ll hold everything together.
It looks like this Robin is in the hurry, not like the one last year, It took a break here and there.
    Happy gardening everybody.
A real Robin, You say ...... that is a good sign.

So how many people has the envelope gone to so far? I haven;t gotten it yet, but why don't we share what you guys got...I'm anxious to hear!

    Hi all,

My internet service is back up to speed, so I can finally load GW and make a post.

Kenny, the fast-flying birdie is on its way to Trish, who is number 3 on our list of 10.

Thanks for the extra care and the excellent ideas, Wendy.

I have a special request . . . if anyone has some Gaura (any colour) I'd like that. Of all the gazillions of seeds I bought or traded this year, I somehow managed to forget the Gaura.

Hi bev...I tried the Gaura, fell in love with it. Unfortunately, the season here isn't long enough, the poor thing was just forming buds when we got a frost last fall. Beautiful flowers though, I'll see if Mom still has seeds from it.

Awesome!! Sorry just got confused I guess with the question about sending it to threegardeners..oh well. Will let ya know when the robin lands again. Till then...

    Ciao for now,

whoo hooo...Canada Post is doing a surprisingly good job, let's hope they don't mess up before the Robin makes it's rounds....

Kenny..I guess you just haven't figured out that this is a "girl" thing. We don't discuss the size, quality, or content of the package. We just analyse, and consider exactly what we are willing to give up to maintain the relationship.
Email when you're finished with it. I'll send you some Nicotania Tabascum.

Like the msg to Kenny, Wendy! LOL! Just letting everyone know the robin has taken off again. On it's way to Melanie in Sarnia. I took it to the post office just make sure postage was still okay. Thanks for the fun.

    TTGM

    Gotcha!

The robin has landed in Sarnia!!! I was ready to go so it didn't take me long to make my exchanges, so it is back in the mail today and on its way to Gigi. Thanks again Bev for organizing!!

    Sincerely,

    Melanie

"Bump" just so we don't get to the second page. Hope the "Robin" hasn't gotten too fat and can still fly! Love watching the progress!

Just wondering how things are going over here. Having fun watching as the robin flies from one place to another!

I just e-mailed Gigi to see if the robin has landed in Terrebonne.

Wendy, your post to Kenny had me in stitches. Thanks!

    Bev

The Robin landed in Terrebonne this afternoon !

    It will be leaving tomorrow...

I will include some Gaura seeds for Bev.

    Gigi

    Hi Bev,

Just a thought here. I am wondering if it might not make more sense for Gigi to mail to LeeAnn in Ottawa instead of it going all the way to Toronto then on to me in S.W. Ontario and then back to Ottawa? Why send the thing hundreds of miles if we dont need to . I can still send the Clivia seeds to Leeann separately.

    Signet

Ho Signet, I just read your post but the Robin has left already. It is on it's way to Connie.

Since I received the R.R.early, I just wanted to let you know most of the seeds are up and growing nicely.
Were to put them all is another ?????? I do this every year.

I did not participate in the round robin this time, but I had a laugh just reading the posts. Good luck with the seeds.

Hey! I'm in the same zone as you ladybug and don't have any sprouts yet...do you start your seeds indoors or wintersow them?

I do some winter sowing, but this year I mostly started the seeds inside. I have a little greenhouse, good light and bottom heat. They all come up.I received some salvia,s from a fellow called Joe, I believe was his name. All the seeds germinated. I have 100 plants. My hummingbirds will be very happy this year.
Wildflower you have to participate next year. It makes the winter go by faster, since we don't go south.
    Good gardening to everybody.

    Hi all
The Robin landed here on Friday 16-03 and left today 19-03 on its way to Kenny. Good luck and happy gardening.

Wow, this is a fast-flying bird! Thanks everyone for making this RR so fun and painless.

Kenny, did you receive my e-mail about the change to the flight path?

    - Bev

I haven't received any emails from you Bev...

    Hi all,

Kenny has sent the birdie off, and everything is on track. LeeAnne, be sure to let us know when you hear that chirp at your door.

    Gee, it's almost finished . . .

    Bev

    Yep, the birdie's out!

Robin landed today, and left today.

    Bump!

is it too late to participate?? What a great Idea..

I just heard from Jeanne / Brugcrazy. She expects the Robin to arrive on Tuesday (because of the holidays). I'll keep the list posted 'cause she's having e-mail stress at the moment.

In response to Daynatews-- yes, unfortunately it's too late. We're just about finishing up-- the robin will soon arrive at its last call before going home again. Next year I might organize another RR, but probably I'll do a named/specials swap instead. Stay tuned-- details will be posted here.

Hi Bev! How's the Robin doing? Bogged down in the c-c-c-cold?

    {{gwi:676794}}
Hi all, Jeanne just posted to DG (her GW connection is still wonky) and the birdie arrived out west on Monday.

So we're done! A big thanks to everyone who participated and treated this Robin with so much care and attention.

    - Bev
