there is no need, you need the leaves to photosynthesis the energy to grow the roots, its the opposite that's true, you set back growth by trimming them.

If you got stalks in the first year (never happened here) you could cut those, as you would change that energy into growth.. but I couldnt ever do that! Thats the best part..

I had my seedlings in four inch pots all summer last year until I finally planted them in September after I redid a bed to accommodate them for the winter. They did really well, and had tremendous root systems on them, the roots had even poked through the drainage holes. Just remember to keep them watered because they dry out quite quickly in those pots. I also gave them a tad bit of fertilizer to help them along. I plan to do the same this year, only I have so many seedlings I haven't a clue where to put them. Right now they're growing in milk jugs, and I need to get more pots to put them in. But, you don't want to cut off the foliage, like silverkelt said, they are what help your babies grow.

Last March I took my seeds out of the fridge, by May almost all of them were growing. Somewhere in June when they were about 4" to 6" tall, I planted them in the garden. They did well with a little Miracle grow and straw for mulch to keep them from drying out.
I worried about them off and on all winter. This spring I can see that they all survived.
Of 41 seeds, 36 germinated and 2 were albino.
Now I'm excited to see what these plants will do.
I cut the folage short when I receive a mature fan I have purchased or when I transplant mature fans to help them settle in. Within a week or so new leaves begin to grow and that tells me the plant is going to be okay.
Last year was the first time I tried daylily seeds and I purchased them from Lily Auction also. This year I have two seeds started and these came from a previous purchase, as a bonus.
