Oh my gosh! That's terrible. We got missed but I'm not sure how - there were black clouds and thunder all over the place and the air got right still, but it passed over us. I'm sure a few miles north got hit though, and further east. Not resting easy just yet, though - apparently more to come throughout the night.

We have a Severe Thunderstorm Watch going on right now....crossing my fingers that it goes bye bye!

Oh, gee, Verena, that's awful! I remember hail like that back in '80 (said with a creaky old voice). We missed the worst of the damage that time - similar to yours - even though the hail was the size of a baseball and fell all over our yard. The car got it, but nothing else. Dh was hoping for a new roof! The neighbours needed a new one, and a new picture window. I guess we had too many trees around.

You're right - things will come back, and i bet some of them do this year. Let's hope, anyway!

Oh Verena, I am so sorry! Earlier this year I had some hail but it sounds like nothing compared to what you described. I was a sky watcher today with storm warnings all around our area as well. I hope those insurance dudes treat you right.

I'm so sorry to hear about all that damage Verena!
Yes, perennials will come back, but trees are a different story. You'll need a vacation after all of this.
Mother Nature can be so cruel at times.........

Oh, no, Verena - that's horrible.
As you say the plants will come back and the damage can be repaired but I'm sorry for you that you have to deal with all that!

I was watching the sky pretty close for a while there too but we just got rain. I can't imagine hail that size. I did see the news last night so I can sure picture the damage.

I sure hope that is "it" for the season!

Thanks all...the insurance people are supposed to come by today or tomorrow, right away because the upstairs windows were broken clean through. They were good over the phone, so hopefully they'll be as helpful in person. I guess it could always be worse...just down around the corner from us, a tree fell on top of my friends mom's house, not sure how bad the damage was there...we're in Penhold, and three minutes north of us in Springbrook, the power was all knocked out, and they weren't letting anyone in last night...it's rumoured that there may have been a tornado...no official word, but I wouldn't doubt it...another friend called last night to see how we fared, and her friend in Springbrook had every window in her place broken...the winds have to be swirling pretty good to get all four sides, I think.
Anyway, we've started the cleanup, and (silverlinings ;-) with that one maple gone, we'll have better sun in the veggie garden for next year...

I'm sooo glad you were able to find a silver lining out of all that carnage. You must be a very strong person emotionally! I don't know if I could do it ;^)

Wow Verena, I just watched the news this evening and they showed the aftermath of the storm that hit Red Deer area.
Thankfully no one was hurt.

We've been having a Tornado watch for the last 2 hours :(

Very sorry to hear of your hail damage Verena. We had hail at 5:30 this afternoon but not enough to do much damage, just marble sized. Corn leaves are shredded, lost some pepper leaves, the cucumber leaves are pretty ratty looking. Just 12 miles south of us there was hail larger than golf balls.

Update...I'm starting to like that hail we got...even though I did lose three clumps of lilies I had just transplanted. Just found out that the insurance is going to re-side the entire house (tin --> vinyl) I think we might go from plain white to a color ;-), replace three windows (including the big picture window in the living room) and re-shingle both the house and the garage, and since we had funny roll-on shingles on the garage, we get to pick what type of shingles we want. It looks like we'll be getting about 12K of work done, that we couldn't have afforded otherwise (and all things that I wanted to change) all because of the damage done by that nasty hail storm. Talk about a blessing in disguise!

Anyway, just though I'd let you all know the happy news. (It really makes up for the smooshed plants!)

Did you do any cleanup after the storm and did the insurance company pay you for each hour you put in cleaning up? If they didn't be sure to put your claim in for that. 'Cause otherwise they would have to foot the bill for a cleaning company to come in and clean up the glass, water damage to floors, someone to pick up shingles, etc. Your insurance rep should have told you this, did they??

Years ago we had a sewer back up in a house we lived in in town. They paid me and but, they also paid the neighbors who came over to help me.

Glad to hear that the insurance company is replacing windows, siding, shingles, etc. Hail can be quite devestating. My brother had hail years ago and also got windows and shingles replaced which they would never have been able to afford otherwise.

It's a blessing in disguise.

Well, we weren't so lucky Wednesday evening - a really big storm blew thru the area, dumped a boat load of hail and a lot of rain (about 2") in a short period of time. We were away camping, arrived home today to find a lot of the garden in shreds. The hostas, peonies and any other larger leaved plants are full of holes and torn, the plants are all splayed out, and we won't be getting much of a fall display from the trees this year. Some of the plants were coming into a nice second bloom - dianthus, salvia, creeping baby's breath but now it's all just yuck. Not much left in the cutting garden either - I'll be able to salvage statice for dried arrangements but no more fresh bouquets. The zinnias, however, look really good - just a few broken heads. Sunflowers also look good and yet the gourds right next to them are shredded to bits. The ornamental grasses look like they haven't been touched.

Oh well - it will be an early fall cleanup this year. They'll be there again next year :)
