New from northern Minnesota

My name is Bryan and I'm from zone 3 in northern Minnesota. This is my first summer really having time to do some gardening, and I've done pretty well for a newbie!

My biggest interest lies in trees and shrubs and things, though I am very interested in flower gardening.. I'm just very overwhelmed! So much to learn! Oh well.. I"ll just have to take small bites and keep chewing (if you catch my drift).

I'm in north-central Minnesota, in Bemidji. We're in what we call the "north-woods" of pine, spruce, and hardwoods with lots of lakes all over.

As far as gardening, my biggest projects this summer and fall have been tree planting, shrub planting, and a vegetable garden.

I'm slowly putting together a shrub garden that now consists of 1 dwarf Alberta Spruce, 1 Chokecherry (common), 1 Purpleleaf Sand Cherry, a Pee Gee Hydrangea (grandiflora), a Mugo Pine, a dogwood (forget which kind now), and of course, a Potentilla.

Next year, I plan to put up a few cast iron hanging plant holders, a bird bath, and mix in some herbaceous perennials, as well as a few spots with annuals.

Right now, we have a small flower garden on the front of our house with some lilies, iris', daisies, black-eyed susans, loose strife, and then a mix of annuals (zinnias, poppies, bachelor buttons, Marigolds.. and a mix of others)

As I am still young (22), I have grandparents with very green thumbs that have provided me with a wealth of knowledge and lots of help/advice.

I would agree with Sharon, it is definitely addictive.

Do you live in the western end or the eastern part of Minnesota?

I live in Manitoba, an hour drive north of the International Peace Gardens, just west of you.

I think the only place I have been in Minnesota is when we have had to change planes in Minneapolis. Now that is a large airport. Once we had a bit of time between flights and so we went over to the mall. The Lego store had some amazing structures in there all made from Lego. Of course, we stopped in there and had to look at them. At that time, our kids were all into lego and would have loved to have seen them too.

Back to gardening...have you tried any particular perennial flowers yet?

Hi Bryan, and welcome! I'm north of you in NWOntario. Good to see a young person with an interest in gardening. It seems most of us inherit it from our parents or grandparents. :)

Welcome Bryan! Gardening can be a very rewarding hobby, and I like to think we are making the world somehow a bit better, at least nicer looking. I've had many spots in my yard that I've planted things and then (almost) completely redone that spot a few years later, until I finally got it how I wanted it. So, in my opinion a garden is a constant evolving thing too.

It's true about passing on the interest in gardening, I inherited my interest in gardening from my Mother going back to when I was still little. Back then, she gave me my own piece of the garden to do with what I wanted.

Welcome to the forum Bryan! Looks like you're on the road to a fine addiction!lol You've got lots of years to add and add and add....hopefully you've got lots of space to grow with. There is tons to learn in gardening, but I don't think you ever quit learning, because there's always something new coming out, and people trying different methods, etc. It really is a fascinating hobby, in my eyes anyway.

So good luck, and hopefully everything you've planted so far comes through this winter with flying colours!

Hey, I think I've been to Bemidji - driving thru on Hwy #2 on 3 separate trips from Ontario to Saskatchewan . I think we may have even stayed the night there once (are there any "Bates" Motels in Bemidji? I remember a real freaky motel clerk, pouring rain, poor lighting and me not sleeping a wink all night). Beautiful country there, though.

Welcome aboard! I live in Chisholm, MN, near Hibbing. I grew up near Park Rapids. I, too, learned my love of gardening from a grandmother. Hope to see you posting again!
