It's just so NASTY here too!! The wind is blowing and the snow is on & off. Anywhere downwind of the lakes is getting slammed by lake-effect blizzards. I was working in a neighbouring town today and there was snow and ice all over the roads. I could put up with it... but there is no indian summer anywhere in the forecast. And I have three weeks of outdoor work promised before I can pack it in for the winter. Grumble grumble moan.

After the last mild winter and the warm dry summer, it almost seems unreal that we would even be mentioning the word snow in mid October. Hopefully though, it's just a blip.

I remember it was October 2002 (at least I think that was the year) when we had a worse October but after that it wasn't too bad of a winter, so here's hoping.

I was just thinking about that year this morning, Glen. It snowed on Thanksgiving and i have a picture of my boys, the little grandguy and the snowman they built for him. It never melted that year - it was a long winter.

"It's begining to look a lot like Christmas..."
Ok...so it's mid October and I woke up to white ground for the first time this year...not really all that bad, but I'm still wondering "where did the summer go???" Guess I better go dig out my carrots and beats...queen of procrastination here, and who'd of thought I'd get away with it this long. The carrots just keep getting sweeter, so they should be really tasty, but it's going to be messy after yesterdays rain and the new dusting of snow. ;-) Come on Hubby, looks like it's time to get that fireplace in!

At least I'm not alone in the "gotta dig stuff" category. Heck I was thinking yesterday before this hit that I'd better get the last kohlrabi in! Then I found I only had a snack worth! Oh well, maybe I can actually start winter clean up when this stops- weedwhack the beds and put all the "will/did go to seed" in that bare patch in the alley. I wonder which kid'll want money that week?

Wohooo, next week they're calling for "average" temps! +9 for wednesday.........get out the shorts!LOL

Maybe next week, I'll get all the cannas, elephant ears and dahlias out. I was able to catch 8 fish out of the pond today and get them into the aquarium in the house. There's another 8 to 10 more in the pond to catch, but will have to try maybe tomorrow as they're pretty spooked since I went fishin'. ;^)

No normal temperatures forecast here. It's supposed to be way below normal, still. Our snow is gone, but it's been blowing and flurrying off and on this evening. Not nice at all.

    Yikes, I'm scared!

That looks about like our forecast!!! Only we have about 2 feet of snow on everything with no frost at all in the ground everything should winter great. I planted some winter pansies last spring and they were still blooming when the snow hit at the end of October, so when spring comes I am hoping that they will take off growing and blooming early.

I am also glad that we had that warm spell last week. It put a crust on the snow so it will not blow around and melted all the ice off the highways. Keep warm everyone.

    Cheers Al

Ouch. After seeing that, i'm hoping the jet stream will dip down west of us! LOL Last year the ground here didn't freeze, but it's starting to this year and dh was just saying that we'd better get some snow soon. Funny, that. It seems like it's been winter since the middle of October but any snow we get has always melted. However, we're supposed to get the cooler stuff next week with some snow too, so that'll be good for the septic fields at least.

Ohhhh buuurrrrr! It feels like it has been -20C forever and this week's forcast dips into lows of-30C! There hasn't been much sun at all, but this coming week looks hopeful. We had one day last week where it got to about -3C, it felt soooo warm :^) Maybe winter is just getting this out of its system and we'll have a lovely Dec-Mar?!

We've got about a foot and a half of snow now, and DH and I punded a bunch of posts in our barnyard last week. It was easier to pound now then a month ago when it was so dry! Snow is an amazing insulator. We could literally scrape the frozen soil off with a shovel.

    Whatever happened to El nino?

    Toots :^(

I'm girding for the well below freezing and small amounts of snow that are headed my way. The only part I'm not sure I'm fond of is... I had to pick up a kid this am. I swear I saw 15+ flocks of geese flying rapidly south!

oh joy, that'll teach me to check the weather! Now I'm getting a snow advisory, blowing snow, temps of -15to-22C

    Yes, where is El Nino?

I had to go out to the greenhouse to fetch some vermiculite, feed the birds, shovel some snow off the deck, plug in the car and take out the compost & garbage, I nearly froze my butt off!

It's -30°C with the windchill right now, thankfully the plants outdoors have good snow coverage!

    Stay warm folks!

We have no snow - well, a skiff here and there but nothing that will insulate. Our temps haven't dipped just yet but are supposed to tomorrow, to that -20 C and colder range. Could be a test year for some stuff in the yard, as we've been having really good snow cover most years, usually before the ground is frozen. I do like the ice free roads, though.

This is why I get migraines! -34* Wednesday night, -1* Thursday... Ugh.

Here is a link that might be useful: This is just goofy...

I know you're all jealous...-38C this morning! (without the wind chill...but no wind yet anyway thank goodness)

Garden chicken, goofy here too...up to -2 for Thursday as well. Its going to feel like t-shirt weather :^)

What's really goofy is that the birds were still chirping this morning even before the sun was up. They're sure tough little guys. They're tougher than the dogs who stayed out for less than 5 minutes to eat and do their business. They come barrelling in the door when its opened like bowling balls!

How cold Toots, about this cold?

    {{gwi:694112}}

Right now we have a winter storm watch. Yikes, now I'm really scared!

    Yup, about that cold! LOL!

Now, Sharon, you're going to give everyone the idea that we all have outhouses. It's bad enough that we live in igloos. LOL!

    Gotta love that shot!

I've got one word for this weather - Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!! Is that a word? I know that last winter totally spoiled me. I'm tired of this winter already.

    Shauna

Cheer up Shauna! Its supposed to be sunny here all this week so I'm sure you're going to get some too :^)
I find I can take the cold so much better if the sun is out and the sky is blue.

    {{gwi:694113}}

This is our dog Annie a couple years ago...she thought it was pretty cold too! (that's the wood heater her feet are on )Sometimes I think there's a people inside those heads!

    Toots :^)

LOL @ Annie, she looks like she wants to climb inside!

The thing I hate most about winter, is when it gets really really cold, and snow makes that grinding squeaking sound when you walk on it. UGGGH! It's like fingernails on a blackboard. And scraping frost from the windshield when it's so cold is the same. I deserve to live in Hawaii, really I do! I would grow an acre of pineapples... and when you all came around to visit, we would pick one and fill it with Malibu rum... LOL. This is sounding like the bubble.

My idea of hell is when it's -40C and there's that blue tinge to everything and the exhaust is just hanging in the air and you know that if there's a power failure you're all going to freeze to death.
But it's not like that right now, we're just being buried alive in snow. It's not even Dec yet and we're running out of place to shovel it.
Sorry, I'm grumpy. I really need a bubble to crawl into, LOL
