Good news from here is that while the housing market & prices have cooled a bit (and there seems to be more availability), the job market is still as HOT as ever.

Thanks for the warm welcome back! You guys are always so nice and supportive:)

We had a call about the house on Thursday night, the guy (and his wife in the background) asked a bunch of questions and at the end of the call he asked if he could set up a time to see the house. He sounded really excited, gave us his name and asked if Friday after dinner would be okay. So, we rushed around all day cleaning out closets and cupboards and doing some last minute cleaning. Then we sat down to wait and NADA! No show, no phone call, no nothing! Who DOES that? sigh

We finally gave up on them at 8:00 and went McDonald's (YUCK) to grab a late supper since we'd had no time to eat earlier. We were so pumped, what a disappointment. Hopefully it gets better from here.

We have decided to move to the Edmonton area since housing is much more affordable. Yeah you guys talked us into it, lol. Actually, we've been looking at houses in Wetaskiwin. Prices are even more reasonable and it's close enough to commute. DH has an open-ended job offer for a welding apprenticeship with a company in Edmonton. We're not 100% sure that he's going to take it, but he's really impressed with the company and the people that he's spoken with. Now that we have the house up for sale he can focus more on applying for other jobs. Can't hurt to see what else is out there before he commits to anybody.

Congrats to both Gil and GC on the sale of your houses. It must feel wonderful to sign those papers, I can't wait!

Yes, it would be the perfect time to bounce Pudge's bubble back up to the top, Sharon. Hmmm, I wonder if I have time for a pedicure. I can't disappoint my foot fans, lol.

Of course, I am absolutely delighted that you have chosen our fair city to come to. A potential greenhousing partner. Before you totally decide on Wetaskwin, tho, take a look at Millet and Leduc. Both are a bit closer yet without losing the small town feel and are very close to Nisku, the huge industrial mecca. DH could pretty much get a good job immediately, just by standing there with a sign around his neck saying "welder". In fact, he'd probably create a bidding war. LOL.

Let us know how things go and when you will arrive. If I can help in any way, don't hesitate to ask. I mean it. E-mail me with any questions you have and I will help where I can. If I don't have the answer, I can certainly find out pretty quick.

Ahhh yes, Wetaskiwin... I grew up about 1/2 hour southwest of there. I (used to) know it well. Nice town & reasonable prices, but Shauna is right, Leduc & Millet are closer & equally nice, as well as Beaumont (my sister lives in Beaumont).

Are you enlisting the services of a realtor to sell your place?

We used to live in Devon (near Leduc) and we loved the small-town feel of that area. Many great areas around the city to choose from! :^)

Things are sure getting exciting for you Cindy! What a crappy thing that guy did to you. A simple phone call wouldn't have killed him! Hopefully the rest of the people interested in buying your house are nicer than that!

It's been just over a week now and we haven't had a single person call about the house. I'm trying to be patient (not my strong point,lol) and optimistic but it's really hard not to freak out. I know it's a terrible time of the year to be selling and it might take a little longer to sell than it would in the spring or summer. We both want to move so bad and I was really hoping it would sell fast. Everything in it's own time I guess:)

Shauna - Thank you so much for your offer of help, I really, really appreciate it. If I think of anything I'll definitely take you up on it. After all, I am gonna need someone to show me all the best greenhouses, lol. I love this forum, you guys are all so sweet.

We are also looking at Nisku, Leduc, Beaumont, etc. but haven't really seen any houses in our price range. In Thunder Bay $150,000 would buy you a really nice house...not the case out there from what I can see. All we can really do at this point is look until our house sells here.

We decided to try selling privately first. Our house is listed online and people can call us to set up a viewing time. We're thinking of having an open house to generate more interest. If that doesn't work, we'll have to list with a realtor.

Well, I have to work in the morning so I better get myself off to bed.

I just have a comment. If the price of the houses are so expensive in Alberta, even though the wages are high, financially speaking would you not be better off living somewhere else where housing is cheaper and the wages are less?

Just thinking back to ourselves 17 years ago when my DH was offered a job to manage the Public Works Department for the City of Thunder Bay. We went out there to look and did some number crunching. Well, as it turned out even though the wage was a lot higher so were the housing costs, car insurance and cost of living. We actually were just the same (financially speaking) after all was said and done by just remaining in Brandon at the same job he was at. And we were close to both sets of grandparents and the majority of cousins by not moving.

So, just be careful. I know that a lot of people are moving to Alberta but there are also drawbacks to it too.

Just my two cents worth.

You know Brenda, that is very true what you say... I only have two other comments. If you are young and go to a high cost of living area, you can always build up some equity and move back and be way ahead. It's not easy to leave Manitoba later if you ever want to. The other thing is, people in the cheaper provinces who make an average salary still can't afford to travel, since the rest of the world makes more money.

But that's neither here nor there, I'm sure Cindy has reasons for wanting to go to Alberta. My fingers are crossed for you Cindy!!

True, Gil. Time to move is when you are young. Another thing...once a couple has kids and they are school aged it is much harder to move because the kids don't want to. Plus you will be more established with friends in the area and so it will be harder to leave. And.. you will have a lot more stuff that you have accumulated over the years that you will have to get rid of. For me all the perennials that I have in the yard would be the biggest reason not to move. I would have an impossible time trying to choose the best ones to take with me.

I do wish Cindy and her DH all the best as they move to Alberta.
