Changed my mind, I guess in Alaska its native is D. pauciflorum , also called D. pulchellum.

Wonderful photo! It is delightful to see fields of these isn't it! We make the trip to YaHaTinda in the Rockies every couple of years to witness them in bloom. Laying on the ground to shoot them isn't for the faint of heart though, the ground is 'polluted' with elk droppings! Mother Nature's fertilizer... :)

funny garden chicken! I never thought about "land mines" I am sure there were moose droppings everywhere. But I was in a marsh, actually trying to capture the flower below, so I had rainpants on.

Gil, yes they both belong to the Primulaceae - Primrose family.

Geez I have tried to start those Dodecatheon from seed the last 2 years and you guys have them growing wild in Alaska...figures...LOL I don't think I will have any success with them this year either!

Hunner...they grow really well here too. We were down south at a dog trial two years ago, and the people who held the field trial had them all over their yard...they told us to take some if we liked and I now have them growing (and just finishing blooming) in my front flower bed. They have multiplied and I think I have a couple that have selfseeded. Have you tried ws'ing them or direct sowing in the fall?? If you ever make it out this way, mine are getting big enough to divide.

I might be able to get shooting star babies from a girlfriend in Brandon who has them in her yard. We sold quite a few at our garage/perennial sale in May. Just let me know if you want a plant or two.

Verena I have been wintersowing them, maybe I should just direct sow some in the fall and see what happens.
