The town next to ours has a problem with cougar. They have also had a moose and one bear come thru town recently, but they are noted for being "mind expanded" thru better chemistry.
Our town has the deer and antelope eating landscaping, and one old lady purportedly saw a cougar in the graveyard.
Personally I've only seen a pair of lynx and one wolverine. We aren't even suppose to have those two! Sorry, no wolves; but plenty of "prairie wolves" their little cousins commonly known as coyotes. They work for the highway dept, roadside cleanup.

Last week I saw what I've tentatively identified as a coyote, in the park just the other side of my back fence. It was jumping up and grabbing tree branches -- every once in a while it appeared to be chewing on something. I couldn't figure out what if was doing. After it was gone I looked at the tree -- he was picking crab apples. I've seen him once since.

Re identification. Coyote colouring (beige or tan), large (german shepard size), heavier at the front than the usual coyotes I see. I'm wondering if it was a cross.

At our last place we had a Lynx and a bobcat. The lynx would lie on the road just over the crest of a hill with her pups almost every year. Everyone always slowed right down as you never knew if she would be there or not. She wasn't afraid of people and only moved out of the way if she felt like it. The pups would play on the road ignoring you. If you wanted to get past you had to slowly move around them and them may/maynot move over for you. You could sit there for 1/2 hr or more sometimes and just watch them at play,sleep or chase bugs.

It was the funniest thing to see and the grandkids loved it. It still happens every year and it's the only time we ever saw them.

We had 3 foxes that played it our yard,watched us working in the gardens and only left when our setter decided it was time for them to go --- he'd trot in their direction bark a few times and they'd wander off. They all seemed to tolerate each other and everyone in the area knew the time as Celtic(our setter) seemed to do this act about the same time of evening Our vet said not to worry about the fox-dog as he had his shots and the foxes were health- they had been handraised by a neighbour as pups as their mom had been killed.

So far this year I have not seen anything but tracks. The wolves tend to come into the farmers yards at night. I'm thinking they just go and cross the road and venture into the bush on the other side. Last year I did see a few that looked a lot like shepherds.

This months Fur-Fish-Game had an article about genetic studies of wolf-coyote crosses. Apparently the NE states haven't ANY full blooded strains of 'yotes left.
