We have some native ones growing in a little swale between the lake and hwy 84 north of Pine River. They were loaded with fruit a couple of years ago but not much fruit the last couple years. Birds seen to wait tik early spring before they strip the fruit off the shrub.
I have grown them from seed but the fruit needs to be whizzed in the blender until all fruit patricles are rinsd off.It is a slow grower at first in pots. It likes acidic soilmix. Winter red is appreciated by local deer though I'll warn you. Good luck.

Excellent point bunchberry about deer damage. . .I had forgotten that issue while drooling over the catalogs this winter. I live in town and didn't have a problem with them until last winter when they suddenly started walking through my yard--roses, raspberries and white cedar were victims of the devils.

I think one of my neighbors had taken to feeding them and my yard was a convenient pit stop. Looks like dogwood is another preferred food....maybe I will try the flame willow instead. Thank you!
