Finally succesfull in rooting cuttings!!!

I started on 01-26 07 with,cutting looking as in picture #3 .As you can see i used 1 litre,water bottle,and regular wht.plastic shopping bag.

I used regular garden soil medium moist.

I started 6 cuttings and when i checked last night after 12 Days i got a 100% root on all six cuttings.

I grew them in my utility room,on the floor,in between the water heater and house heating unit.i believe the temp. on floor is about 80F.I am so happy about it.In the past my results were 50%,and was taking up to 3 month to root.

Congrats;now when/how long and what factors will determine when you will pot up to another size pots. i've started some in the same manner as you have done. newbie at doing this with figs and don't want to do any harm to the roots. thanks JIM

Well Jim: To tell you the true I do not know how i will manage to keep them alive till Spring.
I did not expect them to grow so fast.I bet is not easy to keep them alive without growing lights.
If you got the money buy growing lights and with it it will be easy to grow them on starting now.
    Without lights i see problem.
Best would have been to start them on 1st of April, and then grow them on with minimum precautions, without growlights.
    God bless us.

I've had cuttings grow in pots on windowsils for months without problems. The only warning I can give is to watch out for overwatering which will cause rot. (I'm not including this as much for you as for those people who might read this post and be less experienced in rooting plants)

    Congrats.

Herman , I have about 8 cuttings growing under two 4' flouresent shoplites I got at walmart for about $10 each. I keep the lights about 4" above plants. This works good so far but I don't know how big they will get by April. I started my cuttings (horizontal method -Elder ) and had best results at temp. 75' -80'. Bill.

Chills:No Offense I will take your advice because,Just like you i also killed plants by overwatering.Sometimes when plant do not want to grow, one feel the irezistible urge to water, and:The result a few days latter,is a dead plant.
Bill Thanks for the tip,That is what i will do buy one flourescent shop lite for start from Wallmart. If it was working for you it will work for me
Chills:I would like to use the window seal method but these one litre bottle do not fit between, the window sash and the storm window wich is mouned outside. If i was using one pint water bottle it will work just fine. For next cuttings i will use 1 pint water bottle, because i have three windows at the soth of house, toward the backyard.
I was also thinking to use the same method to start Tomatoes plants. Thanks to all for advice

Herman, how impressive! When did you take the cuttings and what varieties worked so well? Drainholes in those liter bottles? What soil mixes have you used in the past?
    Cella Jane

    Cuttings,taken in Oct.,Drainholes ,yes,varieties multiple,Celeste,megaceleste,zingarella,monstruese,col de dame,etc.
    I think the var.doesn't matter,the Temp.and plastic bag does.

    hi herman,
    amazing results,
herman, do you have to be careful that the cuttings
dont touch the plastic bag? some say that if they
    touch plastic they rot.
do you think the nutrients in the garden soil
helped out instead of a sterile soiless mix?
    good luck

Plastic bag, touching =Bad for cuttings.Garden soil is not better than sterille soilless mix but it works.
The nutrients in garden soil in fact hinder the formation of roots, but still works.
The poorer the garden soil the better for growing roots.

Herman....Right now most of my non-sleeping figs are sitting in my oldest son's room on his bureau which I have moved in front of two large tight south facing windows (he doesn't mind, he spends the school year at his mom's...The passionflowers in his room do need to be trimmed back if he comes for Christmas, though).

I have a mirror mounted sideways behind the plants (which I did last winter to improve on the amount of light). It seems to cut back on the legginess as the plants compete for sunlight.

I swear, except for the passionflowers, most of the plants in that room could go the winter with only 1-2 waterings. The figs included.

Good job Chills. You see it is very helpfull to find solutions like yours than to use electrical energy,in specially looking at the future need to save it any way we can. Thanks again

Herman: I'm happy for you. Your cuttings beat mine but not by much. Gene very kindly sent me 10 cuttings in Dec. On Jan 2nd I planted 5 in Scot's potting soil in 4 inch pots and placed them on an end table near large windows without covering them. Lots of light but very little sun todate and only for a short time in the morning this time of year. On Jan 11 I planted the remaining 5 that were in the refridg. The first 5 have sprouted, some with leaves and they all have roots coming through the bottom of the pots. Like you, I'm thrilled. I'm also somewhat surprised since I turn the heat down at night and it is pretty cool. All my Spring cutting "babies" are growing nicely by the same windows without additional lights. I may have to move them to a cooler part of my house to slow them down a bit. Seems like there are as many ways to root cuttings as there are Fig growers. Now if I can only get figs!!!!

Good luck to all and thanks to all for your good advise and tips.

I just wanted to come on here and TY Herman for the growing tips. About 4 weeks ago I decided to take several cuttings and try the bag method and this method. Due to my laziness I chose the bag method for 3 cuttings and just one with the enclosed container/perlite mix method. Well, the other three were unsuccessful and your method worked well for me.

Good job Fortisi,Looks like it is working ,but you know everyone can do it a little different, that is ok with me as long as it works.I assume you are going to cut the top completelly after a while,of growing.!

    fortisi876,
Looks too wet for me! Could not see the top of the soda
bottle ... open it up if not (unlikely) already so,
otherwise #1 KILLER mold will do it (fig cutting) in...

Actually, if you look closely you'll see the 2liter bottle was cut in half, I just slid the top portion back on instead of sticking everything is a plastic baggie to create a greenhouse effect.

George: I had just got done watering it, then took the photo but I will keep an eye on it thnx!

Herman I forgot to ask, in your 3rd pic I notice you have them wrapped somewhat.....whne do you leave them unwrapped?
ie.....after substantial root growth or after leaves develop?

Im asking cuz I still have mine enclosed like a lil greenhouse even tho its showing leaf growth.

Fortisi:I leave them unwrapped when they start growing, but, only if you have Humidity in that room at least 50 percent.
You need to buy a small humidity Gage.I think walmart or Homedepot got them for $4,and with that one you continuouselly keep an eye on it and you move it in another room where the H is higher or Buy a humidifier and humidify the air at about 80% humidity, and this will be the best aproach.Taking the wrap off is depending on the Hum.in the room.If it is dry the plant will die!!!!!!.

    ok ty for that info!

Im gonna leave the bottle top on for now then cuz I think it may be less than 50% H in that room.

With that said, I just made up another 4 cups with different cuttings in each and decided to set them down by the boiler in my basement....my only concern is it isnt 70* down there but its close. I dont think its anything to worry about since my other potted figs seemed to come out of dormancy and grown a lil bit while down there.
