Most common figs will be hardy in central Florida. That does not mean that the above-ground portion of the fig will not on occasion be damaged or killed by freezes. I would recommend Celeste even though it is not a true dwarf. It is relatively slow-growing, has a great taste, and a closed eye. Another possible choice would be Hunt, which was developed in Georgia years ago, and has long stems that along with the small eye, shed rain and make the fruit resistant to souring and splitting. Other possibilities would be Negronne, Hardy Chicago, or Petite Negra.

I don't think hardiness is an issue with ficus carica in central Florida. From postings that I've read here, sandy soil, nematodes, and defoliation due to leaf rust can be issues.

Any fig tree can be kept relatively small with proper pruning. I prune 10' off of some of my varieties every year, to keep them to size. I have one that is 8 years old, and still only 3-1/2 feet tall, even though the parent tree is 10' tall, and would be much, much taller if not pruned. If you want more, e-mail me.
