Marg, I do both mixed and containers of one particular variety, some plants really can stand on their own so well. If I really like a certain plant, I'll keep growing it (by wintering it over or starting from seed) till I finally tire of it or lose the thing. Last year I had picked up so many different and really attractive plants, can't remember what most of them were named, lol, though have kept them over and will soon see what I can propagate.

I usually do the tried and true, but do add different plants each year. Sometimes i try the same combination year after year just to see if i can get it "just right". The latest has been burgundy and yellow petunias. Last summer i had a plecanthrus and, hmmm, i think a lavender torenia in with them. I also put some venidium and African daisies in containers last year but wasn't really satisfied with them as they drooped instead of standing up straight.

Once in awhile, i have a container that comes out looking fantastic. Not often enough, though! :)

I have the tried and true, but then mix in other plants too. I have some with just one kind of plants and many with a variety of plants. This year, I seem to be thinking, I need a petunia frenzie. You have to try to mix and match or you just won't know how it will look. Sometimes you win and well...sometimes you just plain wonder what you were thinking when you put THAT combo together. lol

Last year I put together really different colors like hot pink, bright orange and deep yellow,dianthus, marigolds, snaps, and petunias. It looked great! Then I did hot pink petunias with sweet potato vine. Martha Washington geraniums with 3 colors of pink dianthus. Rainbow rows of snapdragons in square containerso. I am a sucker for pink and yellow together or white and yellow in petunias, snapdragons or pansies. I even got my neighbour hooked on snaps in containers and in her beds.I also had some really awesome looking grasses in containers on the corners of the deck and porch. By the time they changed color in the fall they fit in really nice with my fall decor. I like dusty miller with any white flowers and a bit of mauve or light purple pansies or lobelia.

Each year I do about 24 hanging baskets and about 36 pots of various sizes from 10" to 20" for customers that don't want to do their own. After all the time, work, heat, water, fertilizer etc I think I make about $1.00 per container however there are some plants that I just think are basic container plants and the Geraniums and Petunias are two of the best followed closely by Bacopa. I really love the Laguna Lobelia and Nemesia and the variious million bells as well. If you look on the Proven Winners web site they have dozens of pictures of containers and hanging baskets all promoting their own product but it can sure give you color combo ideas. Stan
