Savona, i've tried three times with Himalayan blue poppies, so don't feel bad. It can take a long time to germinate - like forever, in my case! LOL Actually, i think the plant i have must have self-seeded because last year there were a couple of babies on either side of it. I like that kind of winter-sowing! :)

I checked my milk jugs on Sunday. More sprouts! Gypsophilia Snowflake, Dianthus Double Mix, collected lavatera seeds, Helichrysum Dwarf Double, Candytuft Flash Mixed, Aster Pot n Patio, Santavitalia Yellow Carpet, Amni, Dwarf French Marigold, and Teddy Bear Sunflower have all appeared.
I'm not quite done planting either. I picked up a some 25 cent seed packages, so I need to plant their daisy mix - it looks really cute. And I think I'll throw a few experiments in - things I have already planted inside. I want to do a comparison. Plus a couple of my hollyhocks don't look good - if I can find some seed I'll start a few more.

Last summer I decided to try my hand at winter sowing. I was going to try my hand at starting some hostas but unfortunately the only one that set seed was one I bought labeled 'AE'. It's a gorgeous greenish hosta with yellowish leaf maargins. I like the vase shape of this one so I went ahead and planted the seeds. While I was at it I decided to try other things. Once again, I started things way to early. Since we didn't have a lot of snow this year, most things dried out and I had to water a few times. Right now things are looking up. I have one flat of seeds up and 6 more flats to go. Some of the seeds were old so they might not even do anything. So far I have Citrus Calendula, 'King of the Blacks' Carnation', 'Domino' Coreopsis, Lupins and a pot of something I forgot to label (never was great at that but I'm slowly getting better.) I keep checking to see if anything else is coming up. Marg

Yesterday, I checked my containers and I had no sprouts. I was starting to hate you all. (J/K). Today I checked them and I have Leonurus sibiricus, Maltese Cross, Shasta Daisies, Lychnis coronaria, Foxgloves 'Dropmore Yellow', Primula cortusoides, and Dianthus arenarius and 'Ballad Blend'. I think my seeds all just got the memo! :P

It was a crazy week last week and I didn't check my winter sowing for 3 or 4 days. And wow! When I finally got to them yesterday I found 21 new containers had sprouted! After 3 years I am still amazed with this method every time the green parade starts rolling along...

Have quite a few sprouts in my pop and milk bottles. The lids have been off from day one, should I be venting things now? They are in a spot that gets morning sun and a wee bit of afternoon sun. Thanks Mona

Forgot to add that the milk jug was cut 1/3 around so could be opened a wee bit to vent. The pop bottles are cut in half so I could raise the top to expose the V vent in each side. First time W/Sing so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Mona

Yes, its ok to start opening and venting your containers Mona. Just keep a eye on the forecast every day, if heavy FROST is forecasted, its best to cover back any annuals to be on the safe side.
Hardy perennials will be fine.

Well, as far as experimenting with WS timing goes, only two varieties out of about 6 from March are sprouting. Shasta Daisies for sure and I'm not sure what the other is. I know the temperature dropped way down on me the next day after sowing the earlier stuff, so that may be why. This winter did not want to cooperate with my WSing that's for sure, but I think I'll still try some early perennials again next March if the weather is better.

The April sowed annuals and perennials are popping up fairly well even though the temperature hasn't been getting much over 10 C though and the wind is really cooling things off. Even one of the beans sprouted the other day, so we'll see how it does.

Some of my containers have stayed very soggy and are growing moss on the surface, so I think I'll be making bigger drain holes in them for next year.

Its sure nice to be able to have the WS'd stuff to check everyday and see sprouts when things are slow yet in the garden :^)

Toots, its all a learning experience that's for sure, its good to keep notes and a database to keep track when you sowed them and when they germinate. In our climate its no need to start so early on the ones that don't need a cold period. For annuals, same thing, IME, sowing later always gives me good results. Tender annuals always indoors, I want blooms, not leaves in June. ;)

Come this fall, I will send you a bunch of seeds to try for your garden. If they grow here, I'm sure they will ok for you too.

I can't remember how many jugs I actually sowed (30ish), but things are looking good. I have around 6 no shows yet. I'm hoping that at least 2 of these sprout,Gas Plant and Astrantia. Very easy way to seed, I must say. (This is my first year.)I'm going to have tons to give away as well.

It's an easy and fun method isn't it Shelley. Glad it was successful for you for your first year.

Don't dump those non-sprouters, some seeds take a whole year to germinate. If they haven't sprouted by the end of June, tuck them away in a corner in the shade somewhere and let them be.. Check on them regularly during the summer and fall and water if needed.

I only have a few no-shows this year too, and what has shown up seems to be in greater numbers. I'm having a lot better success this year than last.

Shelley, I also have two different colours of Gas Plant that haven't sprouted yet, they must be later (I hope).

Shelley and Gillian, gas plants re-seed in my garden quite a bit. BUT, I'm almost convinced now, that they may take a year to germinate. I've tried indoor sowing and w/s with them twice and nothing ever popped up, but after a couple of months I tossed the containers out not thinking that they may sprout way later. So, like Sharon said, if you've got a little spot somewhere in the shade, that's where to put the container for the season.

I haven't gotten around to checking mine for a few days, to busy getting ready to move next month. I checked the flats this morning and I have white Obedience Plant, Cupids Dart and 'Blue Pearl' Jacobs Ladder up. There are also some Black Locust seeds that have sprouted. There are still some things to come but I think I may have to put them in a shady spot and see what happens. I just have to remember to keep things watered! Marg

I got caught up with my sprouts this morning - I am up to 80 out of 140 containers showing green. It's been rainy and cold for the last two days so if the sun comes out I should see some more action...

I have 53 out of 67 jugs sprouted, so 14 plus the 5 I just spring-sowed last week left to go. Some of the remaining jugs are seeds of the stubborn type, so I'll need to find a good place to tuck them for the summer, too.

Just wondering if anyone has Rudbeckias or Trollius spp. sprouting yet? I thought for sure the Trollius would sprout as it can self seed around here. I sowed some in March and April. As for the Rudbeckia, I did some 'Goldsturm' in February (needs the cold period) and some R. hirta later in early April just in case I was still too early, but nada. I won't give up on them, but just wondering if anyone else has them sprouting yet or knows if they're notoriously slow? Thanks.

My Rudbeckia Prairie Sun and Cherokee Sunset just started two days ago. I sowed them April 15.

Toots, I sowed Trollius 'Orange Princess' and Rudbeckia hirta both on March 27. Both sprouted one month later, on April 27 and 29 respectively. It was very warm the week they sprouted. I'm sure yours will show up!

Has anyone else's Myrrhis odorata sprouted yet?

R. hirta and some cultivars have been up for a few weeks now, my Myrrhis that self-seeded are sprouting.

Still waiting on the Myrrhis. I'm waiting on a lot of perennials, actually. Out of the first 30 containers i sowed, only four have shown sprouts. Out of the last 30 containers, 23 have sprouted. The first 30 have a lot that i really wanted to sprout, of course!

Marcia, that's how mine are going, too. Much more of the April sowed seeds are sprouting vrs. March sown. And yes, I have high hopes for the Ruds I'm waiting on:^)

Marcia, so funny you say that about the planting time vs. sprouting... Of what I sowed between Feb 19 & Mar. 1, 5 of 13 have sprouted, and of what I sowed after March 27, 13 of 13 have sprouted.

That can't be all coincidence!

There must be some kind of scientific reason, Gil. The early ones we plant are usually the ones that need a longer period of stratification, but i would think that in this heat they'd sprout a lot quicker. Obviously not, though. And a lot of the later ones are annuals and they almost always sprout faster than perennials.

Still, we have a pretty good percentage, don't you think? :)

I had almost given up on anything else germinating. I checked yesterday and some of the 'Sunray' Coreopsis is starting to come up. Maybe there's still a chance for my hostas. I sowed them early, in Feb., and they still aren't showing any signs of life. There are still 2 flats left and I think I will just hang on to them for the summer and see what happens. Marg

Don't give up on those slow germinators. I just had my container #1 (pink butterfly weed) pop up yesterday - it was sown of Feb 19th. This past week I have seen sprouts for columbine, echinacea, trollius, helenium, bee balm and rubdeckia (all sown in Feb).

I am having the best germination results in 3 years of winter sowing - 105 of 140 containers have sprouted so far.

Do you all have a rule of thumb when to plant ws stuff out? I'm talking about perennials here, I only ws'ed one annual. Is there a certain size they should be?

Check out the mother WS forum, Trudi has a method called HOS, I've planted a few so far, they're about 2" high. I really don't have a rule of thumb, I just plant as I go. I think I finished planting around July last year. LOL

Houston, we have Rudbeckias! Even the March sowed tray...phew. You just have to worry and whine and apparently they sprout :^)
