Hi,

Since I am still new to Fig growing in the ground,
all I can say it is better to get a tree that is
very productive and taste good at the same time(as
you have room for just 1 tree).

Fig tree can grow big in a few years, some varieties
grows faster than others. You can ask for advices
from fig growers here on this forum.

Continue to do some research on what varieties will due well for you in the Dalls area. You will have more choices than you can imagine.

"Brown Turkey" can be insipid and not very tasty.

"Celeste" is very sweet, popular, but can drop its figs when stressed.

"Ischia" is reputed to be a very good fig.

There are far more choices offered from other sources. Check out: Durio Nursery, LA. James Robin, LA. Stay away from Ty TY and Willis Orchards.

You will do fine growing figs in your area. Check in to this forum for more advice if you should run into problems. You will be up to your ears in figs either this season, or very shortly.

Just remembered...try Ison's Nursery, Georgia. They sell "Instant Orchard"-size trees that are at bearing age. Instant figs...no waiting!

PS...You can't go wrong with "HARDY CHICAGO" as your first tree....or, "BLACK MISSION".

"Almost Eden" lists many figs that will do well in your area, like "Purple Passion"

hey thanks guys! I'll check into all those places. I had been tempted to buy from Willis, until I came here saw that big thread about them.

If you only can have one fig, I would recommend a Celeste. It is the most cold hardy and is very sweet and good for preserves. This is the Texas fig guide.

I think I've decided to go with the LSU Purple.

Ison's has one that 3'-4' Caliper: 1/2"

Durion just says 1 gal. I emailed them about the actual tree size and shipping charges.

Wish I could find one local here in Dallas.

Should I keep it in the pot this year and plant it next fall?

I may also get that ISCHIA at Home Depot just to see how it turns out. It looks like it may be more bushy than tree like.

I would plant your fig tree in the ground in the Spring after the cold weather has passed.

There are many ways to plant fig trees to conserve space. Two varieties in the same hole, espalier, the Japanese method of planting along a fence, or wire ... the options are endless.

Just some thoughts.

I ordered the LSU Purple and Celeste from Ison's. Yay.. can't wait to see what they do this year. i'm going to plant the LSU Purple in the ground and keep the Celeste in a pot. I might try to get a couple more different varieties too.

Would like something like a Peter's Honey. Might get one from Durino's.
