rooting progress this winter.

Below are pictures of cuttings I'm rooting right now. I've basically used Dan's methods of cleaning, paper towel and baggies. I couldn't find the UPM quickly, so I use Miricle Gro, potting mix without fertilizer or moisture retention additives. I rooted in paper towels and move to cups when initials were at least 1/4" long. Some I put in cups because the buds had sprouted without roots. It's very important to do that because the moisture from the paper towel will cause the buds to mold or rot. I had a few of those. The initials will break out sooner or later. It's nice to see roots before cupping but it's not necessary.

The pictures are of Martin's Uknown, Ventura, Paridiso and Strawberry. The plant I'm showing is a Martin's Uknown.

The most handy watering tool. It let you measure the amount and let you put it right where you want it. Since I have holes up and down the sides of my cups, I can shoot a little water where it needed without soaking the whole cup. Works great

Those rival even Jose's monster roots!

    Gene,

Nice to see your pictures. One of the benefits of rooting in a nutrient containing mix is that you don't have to be in a rush to pot your cuttings into its next soil. Should you start introducing them to some sunlight, you might consider covering those rooting containers with Aluminum foil.

I will be ordering my UPM at the St. James Nursery next week. I've been real busy trying to protect some of my citrus trees from the 20 year freeze that is expected in our area this weekend and collecting some spare cuttings of my young in ground fig trees.

Jason, no way but....I think I know part of Jose's secret.

Dan, you've taught me well, thank you. I've been exposing them to sunlight on a daily basis in a window for now and I also have them wrapped in foil. I have a few that I've moved up into 6 inch pots that have gone outside, weather permiting. I think I'm gonna bring all my trees inside the house tonight even my year old dormant ones. I afraid this cold snap just might be to much for them. Good luck with your trees, I wish I was off of work I could scoot over there and give you a helping hand. I hope they all make it through. Like I said before, I think God is mad a Al Gore and is trying to teach him a lesson. That's why we had the cold wet summer and a very cold winter. Let's say a prayer that these idiots who think they can control the world weather wake up and give due credit to the creator for his wonderful planet and the way it runs. He doesn't need Al's help. And we all know it's but a big money scheme for Al.

Would I be asking too much of you if I asked you to order me a bag of UPM also. I'll gladly drop you a check in the mail or you could give me a call when it comes in and I'll just drive over and pick it up myself. I have a big bunch of cuttings I will be starting in about a month and it would be nice to use some UPM on this batch.

Time to go off to work. Dan thanks for all you done to facilitate the growing of figs from cuttings. It's great fun.

Gene, they really look good. What moisture level did you mantain in the cups, did you keep track to that?
The few trees I have are in the greenhouse and they are starting to develope figs, should I remove them?

    Gene,

I will gladly pick up a bag of UPM for you....will let you know when I have it ready for you. Denise may not have it in stock right now and may have to order it for me.

I'm trying a new technique in an attempt to save some of my citrus trees from this deep freeze. I am wrapping the lower part of my trees with an electric pipe heating cable. I picked up quite a few of these last year when they were on clearance. If I can save a portion above the graft they will grow back. I'm hearing this cold snap may well destroy Louisiana's citrus industry.....this seems to happen every 20 years or so.

    Re global warming..........

Carbon Dioxide is the SOLE source of ALL plant and animal life's food. Without carbon dioxide there would be no life forms as we know it. Photosynthesis is the very source of all of the oxygen that we breath......photosynthesis does not work without carbon dioxide and food is not produced without it either. Plain and simple.......No CO2 equals no food and no oxygen source for man. To believe that carbon dioxide is a pollutant is the height of absurdity.....but to legislate that it is a pollutant is insanity.

Long term climate change is due to plate tectonics and not caused by man. Man activities cannot put enough carbon dioxide into the air to affect climate......those algae, trees, plants, and oceans of water absorb it much too fast for the trace amounts we see in the atmosphere to ever be a man caused problem. The changing levels of carbon dioxide in the air is a direct result of the changes in ocean temperature caused by increased solar activity, changes in the earth's rotational wobble, and by under-the-ocean volcanic activity. As the air and water temperatures rises through these normal cycles, the C02 content of the air rises ever so slightly due to the decreased chemical solubility of CO2 in water. Accordingly, the increase in observed CO2 in the air is due to an increase in water temperature and not the other way around as Al Gore's minions would want you to believe. Man made global warming is pure Baloney and the science is far from being over as he claims. It is just a money ploy, power grab, and a method to further control every aspect of our daily activities by our much too political "scientists" and politicians.

Most Americans have no idea how intrusive this will be in their daily lives in the not too distant future. Centuries from now mankind (if it still exists) will laugh at this absurdity in the same way we laugh at those who believed that the earth was flat and that earth was at the center of the universe.

Thanks Dan, that's what I wanted to say. Haha. Let me know about the UPM, where, when, and how much.

Hi Joe, sorry I overlooked your message. I kept the moisture level on my meter around 3 and only added water when it reached 2. About your figs, I guess it depends on weather or not you can keep them with enough sunlight and warmth to bring them to full ripeness. I'm assuming they are actively growing trees. I would think that breaking them off would on encourage further growth and figs. Perhaps someone in your situation with a greenhouse could better answer that question.

Those look great, Gene. Good job! You're making me anxious to start mine! Just moved all my smaller potted figs into the garage for safe keeping. Supposed to be 22F here in AM and in the high teens Sat./Sun. Stay warm. Tim

Thanks Tim, I will leave mine in the shed tonight but tomorrow they will come into the house until after the cold leaves.
