I would imagine that all of your questions and more could be answered with a visit to the search function on this fig forum. There is a wealth of knowledge and variety of experiences in past threads. You could also go to the figs4fun forum and find lots of answers. There is a real good tutorial about propagating cuttings somewhere on that site.

Sandra, I think the following thread will be of great help in answering your questions well enough. I personally try to find one-year wood that's 'hardened off' (not green and new, but not too brown and knotty), and avoid everything else. I try to take tip cuttings, even though I've seen better rooting characteristics out of pieces that are cut from near the trunk, primarily because I want potential for a nice 'tree' form with limited pruning and attention.

But, the following experiment thread should answer some questions about another user's experience.

I do, however, agree with Little John's sentiment of using the search feature. There is an abundance of information here at GW/FF, but a lot of repeat questions have been asked lately (especially with regard to pruning)

Thank you for your responses. I have done a lot of research on line and if anything found way too much information which makes things even more confusing.

satellitehead, that is the coolest experiment posted I've read so far. It sounds like this year's wood would be optimum for cuttings. I hope I can identify it properly in the tree. :)
