Watering the vegetable garden

We have two new garden patches for this season. There is no water other than a river. Is there a way we can pull water from the river to water the garden? The river is very wide and very deep - it is about 400 feet from the patch. The land slopes down to the river and the water is 7 feet below the land's edge. Any ideas would be appreciated.
