Yikes! That's like -18F, right? We've got -10F this a.m.; supposed to be colder for the weekend. We can't really complain, though. Most years we get 2 solid weeks of -20 to -30F in January with highs nearing 0. (F)

I'm thinking it's too soon to start planting indoors. With my lights, they get too big too soon. WS is always fun because we get to play in the dirt and plan. Unfortunately, the flats I like to use for all my planting, indoors and out, are up in the unheated barn. Don't wanna go up there...(whine).

It was -23F here when I went to work. We had forecast overnight lows of -39 (that's pretty much the same for both scales) for next week, but I see they have warmed it up to -35C/-31F. Lucky us. I imagine it's these couple of really cold weeks in the winter that sets our hardiness zones apart.

Elvis, yeah it is way too early to start most stuff. I have started begonias, astilbe and Alyssum saxatile already because they take forever. I will be doing most of my indoor sowing around March.

I can't remember what it is that i ordered from McFayden last fall that said they needed to be planted early. Starts with an E, i think. I'm going to plant them. Also, i got some primula seeds from Sharon and the instructions say that they need three weeks of warm and however many weeks of cold, so i'll winter sow them but leave them inside for three weeks.

Connie, i was whining because i had to walk out to the car this morning and then from the car into the school! LOL

Following is a look at what Canadians can expect for the remainder of the winter:

British Columbia can expect near normal temperatures and precipitation for the remainder of the winter.
Near normal temperatures will dominate the Prairie Provinces with the exception of southern Manitoba which can expect below normal temperatures.
Below normal temperatures will dominate in most of Ontario with the exception of southern areas of the province. North and eastern Quebec can expect above normal temperatures. For precipitation, central areas of Ontario and Eastern Quebec can expect above normal precipitation.
Milder than normal temperatures are expected for all of Atlantic Canada. Precipitation for New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and most of Newfoundland and Labrador is expected to be below normal.
For Northern Canada, above normal temperatures will dominate Yukon and most of the Northwest Territories. Below normal temperatures will dominate central areas of the Northwest Territories.

I did laugh when I read on the weather site that this winter may essentially be two seasons: the winter that wouldn't come (as in the mild temperatures in December and early January), and now the winter that wouldn't leave.

Before spring comes, I am looking forward to "mild winter" where there's still snow but at least you can do things outside. Maybe I'll trim some trees then, but for now it's run to the car, run to the building.

The weather guy on TV last night said the we are supposed to get another dump of snow on Monday (as if we really need it) then into the tank with temperatures again. Where is El Nino???? I thought that this was supposed to be such a mild winter!!!!
According to all the groundhogs around here we should be having an early spring! I think it will be early allright, early in May!!!LOL

Oh well I planted Foxglove last night so I am on the way to another season of gardening.

Al, that's what my husband keeps asking - what the heck happened to El Nino? Good question. I think he went south! LOL

We really could use some more snow but it doesn't look like it's happening. We only have about a foot altogether, and with this cold, the frost has already gone down into the ground. Today it's -30°C with a windchill of -43°C. I don't like it.
