All you have to do is go collect the seed at the end of summer and scatter it where you want plants. It grows very easily especially in poor soil hence its name. Most lupins don't take well to be transplanted as they have a very long tap root that doesn't like being disturbed. I think I would mix up the colours by scattering seeds of pink and yellow lupins as well. I'm sure other people here can give you some other great ideas as to other plants that would do well. Daisies is one that comes to mind for me.

I'm sure I've grown them because I got a bunch of lupines in a "perennial wild flower mix" one year. They grew very well.

Last year a gardening friend from NS gave me a handful of Lupinus perennis Wild Nova Scotia Lupine seeds. They winter sow very well and they transplanted just fine from container to ground, mind you, you'll have to make sure to supply water till they take off on their own. We had plenty of rain last year so I only had to water them once after they were transplanted.
With wintersowing, there's no soaking or nicking the seed.
Winter Sowed March 03/05, Germinated April 6/05.

I live in Lunenburg, NS. Where can I buy Lupine seed and can I simply cast it into a field of grass and have it take?

I didn't even know there was a wild, native Lupine until I was at the Calgary Zoo a couple of weeks ago, where they appear occasionally.

You can buy seeds at Gardens North. (go to "catalogue" then "Retail Catalogue" then you can search Lupine). I have started many lupines from seed and I find them very easy.

We have tons of lupines around here. I took some dried seed heads from some dry plants (they will self seed in the same area). They grew quitw well. Now, I know everyone says that they dislike being transplanted, but I have quite successfully transplanted younger plants from my back yard to the front (uncultivated meadow). Also, I was just reading about how they are excellent for combating erosion. So is fringed aster, another wildflower. Good luck!
