It's possible. I have heard from people in Anchorage that they could be zone 3, 4, 5, or higher depending what part of the city they live in. How high up, close to the water, etc. For you, just try different perennials and you will find out roughly what zone you are. You might try a search of "indicator trees", native trees you can look for in your area that will tell you what zone nature has picked.

Don't worry about those Midwest states, they have dry, (relatively) cold winters and none of the maritime influence that keeps parts of the West Coast so temperate.

I have heard that Alaska can really vary, depending on how far away from the ocean you are.

One way you might be able to tell: If you know approximately what the coldest temperature is in winter, you can view the USDA's corresponding chart to tell the zone rating. Unfortunately, their map doesn't include Alaska, but, say, you know that your coldest morning in winter is 10 below Fahrenheit. Using the chart, zero to ten below fahrenheit would be a zone 6 on the USDA scale.

Hi Pam, How lucky you are to live in beautiful Homer! I have been lucky enough to visit a couple times. (I live 6 hours away!) Have you ever been to Fritz Creek Garden in Homer? The owner is extremely knowledgeable - travels around the world, I hear, getting new plants. Is there any way you could stop in there? I am sure someone could give you good information about your zone.
