I was in southwest Germany (Freiburg) in April of 2010. There were fig trees growing in that region, as it is one of the mildest parts of Germany. By the cathedral there is a market. One of the vendors was selling potted herbs and other plants. I asked her if she sold fig trees. She said that at her nursery they only sell one kind of fig and to her knowledge it was the only variety grown in that area. She said the name of it is "Bauer" (which means "farmer" in German). She said that it had to be protected the first few winters and then is ok after that. Not sure if it is the same variety being grown near Munich, but it might be.

The main commercial dark figs sold in Europe come from Turkey. The variety known as Bursa Siyahi or Black Bursa is most likely the one sold in Germany. Bursa figs are as common in Europe as the Black mission in the states in terms of commercially sold fresh figs.

I bought what I was told was a Bursa Siyahi (Black Bursa) Supposedly the Black Bursa needs a fig wasp to pollinate. The tree now has 5 small figs... without the wasp will they not fully develop and ripen ??

hrhsch, I think I saw the fig you are talking about in Germany . It is very large , purple fig. My understanding is it was imported, not Germany grow fig. Also, Germany imports a lot of fruits from Austria. But that purple fig , I don't think is from Austria.

From whst I have been able to find out... the figs are grown in Turkey and shipped to markets all over Europe

I ran into a similar looking fig while travelling in Bolzano the foothill of the dolomites in Norther Italy.
There are very big mountains there. I was surprised to see a 40' fig tree with these large shiny dark purple figs, light amber interior and incredibly sweet.
Bolzano is a German speaking town in Italy so it is possible that this is the same fig as grown in Germay (Bauer).
