A very versitile species. Yes, it does prefer that moist soil, but doesn't need it. Mine grows under native oaks in dry gravelly soil. While I am sure it does not do as well as it could, it is still very satisfying. I have seen other people grow it under tall pine where it is equally dry, and all is well and good. But as with just about any plant, the more sun, the more flowers.

I would be concerned next to the house about lime leaching from the foundation. Alkaline soil - not good. If you're worried, replace the soil. If you just want to see what happens, than so be it. Removal and readdressing the problem later is not difficult. Could make a nice addition, especially if your basement window is near the soil level where you could peer at the flowers and nice foliage without bending down.

Thank you Leftwood. If you can grow it in dry shade, the deck should be just fine. I was thinking under the deck near the house for that exact reason; my only south window in the first floor is under the deck at ground level (on that side of the house). I was thinking of putting Vinca under there, but I really like the shape and bloom of the Crested Iris.

If it likes acid, it should be good there. I get a lot of oak leaves in the spring and needle shedding from the neighbors jack pines that divide our lots. If it divides well, maybe in a few years I'll move some to commune in my hill garden under those pines with the Winterberry and Canadian ginger I'm planning on putting there (hopefully with some Astilbes).
